I'm sure no one will believe me, but the flashback here is slightly adapted from an old scripted page that I somehow never ended up drawing out. I'm not sure what my reasoning for not drawing it back then was, but I'll be sure to fix that when it comes time to work on Volume 5. The inclusion of a flashback here to fill in that lost information may be a little sloppy, but I hope it helps at least a little. Sorry, again. ^^;
Rain - Volume 4 FINALLY came out this month! If you're interested, you can find that right here!
Or if you're not caught up, you can find all the books so far here.
The copout-y answer is that she knows Debbie has brothers, but hasn't really met them herself. After all, why hang out at Debbie's house when with two little brats running around, when Emily's an only child with adult supervision only very rarely present?
Debbie meanwhile probably has countless of pictures with her old bestie on her computer that surely her little brothers have seen at some point.
THIS IS INSANELY UNCOMFORTABLE. LET'S SKIP TO GRADUATION SO RAIN CAN ESCAPE THIS HORRIBLE SCHOOL FILLED WITH VERY TENSE TEENAGERS AND IRRESPONSIBLE ADULTS WHO SHOULD BE HELPING THEM BUT AREN'T.
I guess our only hope is that Debbie realizes Rain is a girl and decides not to pursue it or she is somehow magically not a complete jerk about it. The latter is unlikely due to her current attitude towards Rain.
And how terrible that those awful little kids were Debbie's brothers! What are the odds of everyone being in that mall at the same time, I swear. Must be the only form of entertainment in that town.
Debbie's immediate response to a "guy in a dress" is "live and let live" so... hopeful? I would be more hopeful if she wasn't currently super opposed to Rain.
Oh Rain... with a defensive response like that you're only confirming her suspicions... A better response would have been to tell her she was delusional.
Am I the only one thinking Emily needs to put in an appearance in this scene and soon?
Yeah. I keep thinking that she shouldn't act so flustered and defensive. It makes her look like she has something to hide. Now, she does have a couple things to hide, but all the more reason to try to deflect suspicion.
What if she instead thinks Rain is taking the testoster-mones, transitioning from female to male, making this a light-hearted misunderstanding rather than an unwanted outing!
What, don't look at me like that, I'm an optimist.
She did say live and let live so that means she won't be mean and use this to hurt Rain or Emily right? Between dump face, former older sister and the probably secretly gay homophobe we have enough mean people.
Honestly, you guys are quick to lump ppl in a basket of "mean people", but this is an oversimplification.
Older brother has big brother issues, and sees Rain as hurting herself.
This girl is honestly probably pretty okay with her, so long as she didn't hurt Emily. That's it. She really doesn't care that much. "Live and let live" "(blah blah blah) Emily" (Ears perk up)
... Jocelyn, I don't ask many things of you, because I trust you as an author, but please. We only need one Wildflowers. Don't take this in the worst possible direction D:
Artorigus, having read wildflowers, I don't think we need the one we have. It's 99.9% depressing and not realistic for the majority of trans experiences to my knowledge, most people don't get beaten and harassed pretty much every day non stop to the point of hospitalization. Wildflowers is basically the worst case scenario all the time. People are free to enjoy it. I personally find it needlessly graphic. Also, after the author started calling people with certain mental health issues or identities "special snowflakes" and fakers who don't deserve treatment and cussed me out when I said I felt it was counter to the message of the comic, I stopped reading because I felt it had become toxic. I'm not bashing the author or the comic, but I feel it's not putting things in a good light and people should know. Because I know people will want evidence here's a link to the conversation I had with her after reading the forums. http://www.wildflowerslgbt.ca/news-archive/posts/135452/depression-and-statistics/
Depends on where you grew up I think. Being trans really was that bad for my best friend who grew up in rural, fundamentalist Tennessee. Stay-in LGBT conversion camps where they punished misbehavior by denying meal privileges, high incidence of being targeted for physical and sexual assault, emotional abuse and abandonment by family members, constant hiding and/or abuse from peers, the entire deal. It's not unrealistic, just uncommon.
That's why I said "not realistic for the majority of trans experiences" meaning not typical, it certainly happens, but it's not an accurate representation of most trans experiences. I apologize if I wasn't clear, my point was wildflowers is not a representation of the "typical" trans experience. Also, while I see value in showing the struggles trans people face, I think it is taken too far when the character basically does nothing but struggle. Also, the author's view that people who use atypical pronouns like "zie" are "special snowflakes fakers" (to paraphrase) is harmful to non binary trans people and to trans people in general. I myself am a binary man, I cannot understand zie and zir on a personal level, but I respect a person's right to ask for pronouns that make them most comfortable, I don't have to understand because it's not about me, I need only accept and be respectful. To see another trans person especially one who puts themselves in the public eye, express such hate and disdain for others under the trans umbrella bothers me, because we should imo work to lift eachother up, not turn the words of those who hate us against others.
I had my suspicions that Debbie would out Rain, I also suspected that Rain's father could come back and out her. But I think Debbie was a better choice.
She hasn't actually outed Rain as such yet, (unless there's someone we're unaware of in a stall listening in) just clocked her. And she won't if she really wants to be friends with Emily. If she outs Rain, I suspect Emily will never forgive her.
It just hit me:
Back when we saw the seemingly random kids run up to Rain and the others in the mall, I should have realized they were going to have a reoccurring role in the series. Why? Because they had COLOR! If they were just random background characters who were never going to show up again, they would have been white outlines!
Yea, yea, I know there have been a handful of unnamed background characters that actually had color, but the overall trend was still there!
Optimistic outlook being hoped for.... My fan-fantasy script would be that although Debbie clocks Rain, that Debbie also starts crying and says that it's so unfair that she's the one who looks so "unfeminine" while Rain is so pretty. Rain then offers to help teach Debbie makeup and better fashion taste. They hug each other and then Debbie joins "The Group". Could we hope for something like that?
Oh no! I'm really sorry that happened, agh :(
I hope she's recovering well and stuffs~ <3

That's my answer and I'm sticking to it.
That was actually clarified at the time. They ran into a crowd and she lost them.

I mean, Maria probably COULD have caught up with them, but her friend needed her more than she needed to knock some children's heads together. XD

It's no use. Jocelyn is going to the story where she wants it to go. Just look at how she let Kellen live when so obviously she needed to go.
I hope she's recovering well and stuffs~ <3
