While the last page was indeed devastating (and important), I don't want to hang on to that mood right now. Fortunately, Rain is easily distractable. And hey, being called "pretty" by her crush practically negates everything else in the universe at that moment. Emily always knows just the right thing to say.
Although, is she just saying that to cheer her up, or is she speaking from the heart because that's absolutely how she feels. However she meant it though, it's probably clear from that last panel how Rain interpreted it (and how Maria and Chanel interpreted it, for that matter).
I think Chanel's expression in the second-to-last panel is kind of cute (and possibly indicative of all the shippers).
Emily's expression in the last panel kind of worries me a bit. I think she realizes that she is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Emily doesn't want to hurt Rain any more than Rain already has, but she wants to keep her mixed feelings from Rain.
Gah! You monster! If Emirain works out because of Emily using the exact same cheer-up compliment Maria used near the beginning of the story (also at the mall no less!) I'mma be peeved, as will the other few stragglers here still clinging desperately to our Rain x Maria ship.
I hope you know what you're doing, Jocelynn. Displeased shippers are a (*coughminorannoyancecough*) powerful force to be reckoned with.
I've been rereading the series both online and in print and I noticed a fun discrepancy in this page, compared with the printed book version. Here, Emily's facial expression conveys an obvious feeling in the last panel, while in the book (volume 5, page 54) she's instead smiling at Rain.
I'm a few years late on this, but thought it worth pointing out.
Been in Rain's EXACT position before. Just... all the feels.
OHHHHHHH YESSSSSSSSSS, THE CANON DEPARTMENT IS IN SIGHT! We just better not hit those rocks over there.
