What's this? A new page? But why is Rain's hair long? Why is it black and white? Anyway, it's not Christmas! It's not even a post day!

I'm trying something a little different today. This is a full page from Chapter C: True Family, the exclusive bonus chapter of Rain - Volume 3. It's a random page from the middle of the chapter (but I felt kinda stood well on it's own even without context). I will not be posting the whole chapter, nor other pages probably (it's still exclusive), but I thought maybe it might be fun to offer this little preview, what with the book coming very soon.

Chapter C follows the trend of previous bonus chapters in that it revolves primarily around backstory. Chapter A focused on Rain. Chapter B focused on Maria. Chapter C follows all the main kids (Rain, Maria, Rudy, Gavin, Chanel, Emily, and Ky), but with special attention being placed on Ky. As with the previous bonus chapters, none of this information is essential to understand the overall story. However, it does flesh the characters out with background information that I had no other way of really covering in the main story. And as with the first two bonus chapters (and really, Rain in general), expect plenty of laughs and feels.

I hope you'll check it out when the book is released (it'll be available here when it does come out). ^_^

Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.

Incidentally, if you don't have Volumes 1 or 2 yet, Lulu is running a sale all weekend for 30% off all books.

What do you mean with exclusive Chapter?
Jocelyn 7th Dec 2015, 1:08 AM edit delete reply
@Pfc E. Sledge

By exclusive chapter, I'm referring to the books.

The books primarily consist of the content you see online, but each one also features a bonus chapter that cannot be found online (making them exclusive to the books).

Strongwell grandma is truly badass grandma. Also you know you're doing it wrong when the grandma, the one you'd expect to be more conservative, is more accepting.

But this page does strike a chord with me because I was in a similar situation for a long time before I got forced out-I was REALLY scared of how my parents would react-they'd made their stances seemingly clear in overheard conversations, and I legitimately feared being kicked out. I never could have worked up the nerve to tell them, and so I had a plan laid out where I would cut all possible avenues of contact with them, cover my tracks, the whole nine yards. I don't have to do that now, but the memory sticks with me still.

Why is it black and white?

Color is ridiculously expensive. To print everything in color would mean the books would end up costing over $40, and I don't imagine most people realistically being willing to pay for that. It simply isn't worth it.

Isn't it possible to make an option, so people can choose if they want color or not?
Jocelyn 9th Dec 2015, 5:19 PM edit delete reply

Yes and no. I could, but besides adding to my already stressful workload, I would have to buy a proof copy myself before being allowed to sell it. If something is off and I need to edit it again before selling, I will need to buy another proof copy each time until I get it right. This is getting a little personal, but I am not a wealthy person by any means. And that's a lot of money (not to mention time and effort) to spend on something that realistically very few readers would actually be willing (or able) to pay that much for.

As much as I would love to offer a color option, I don't foresee one coming along anytime soon. I don't like making things about money, but I really just can't afford to do something like this right now.

Because b&w is cheap, open any manga in a bookstore and it will be in b&w, unless there is a special color page, like in book 4 or 5 in Scott Pilgrim. Even manga of really popular(read artist is making buku money), such as Naruto, or One Piece, are b&w, unless it's in Shonen Jump, but that's magizine money there. I've seen where the creator of One Piece, Trigun, and Rave Master/Fairy Tale were asked the same question at some point, and it's really simply, cheaper to do, same reason for paperback books.

I don't know if anyone follwing this comic, has ever read, or owns the Scott Pilgrim books, but they're about general manga price; about &10-$13.49, and the hardback colored versions are about $30, so Jocelyn is pretty close. Not just the colored ink, but the paper also cost more.

Now that I have a decent job, I will be finding some spare cash to actually buy your books, woman. Bonus chapters... yeah, I'm actually doing the same thing with the stories I intend to publish, versus what's online, the actual books are going to be like an extended cut, as the movie phrase goes.

Grandma sounds awesome! I can't wait for volume 3 to be out so I can read the extra chapter!

Thank you so much for this comic, Jocelyn. It may be the most engaging trans/queer comic I've ever read. I stumbled across it Sunday and have just finished catching up. I also went and ordered volumes 1 and 2 during the weekend sale. I think I might be an addict. >_<

When is the new chapter going to start? I thought you had said December, but I probably misread it. I'm going through withdrawals haha

It will be back on Christmas day (December 25th). ^_^

Sorry for the long hiatus though.
