So, the US Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is now legal nationwide. As soon as I found out, I wanted to draw something. <3
Maria and Chanel are a bit young to be thinking about marriage, but they're the only known and prominent same-sex couple I have in the story at this time. And besides, I'm sure they'd be thrilled to hear this news too. ^_^
Just as an update from the future: this is now possible since 2017 - finally. And maybe even the "Selbstbestimmungsgesetz" is going to be reality this year!
Gay marriage has been legal in Massachusetts since 2004, so although the decision is amazing news, it only actually changes anything in 14 of the fifty states where there was a ban on gay marriage xP.
Sadly, my state being one of them. Been fighting in my area (Sadly, a good portion of that with family) to get this for a long time. When I heard the news, I could not suppress the squees of delight. Yes, there was actual squeeing and jumping and clapping. Like I was a little kid.
My sister told me and I was so hyped! Going through social media and laughing at ousts showing other posts by homophobes saying "Welp I'm moving to Canada" because given the circumstances, that's such a logically sound decision.
I find marriage over all to be completely stupid, however, I can see the appeal even if I dont fully understand it. I do wish to know what took the surpreme court so freaking long to declare the most logical decision as law? As for the 4 judges that voted against this, well, they have now been labeled and will be, sooner or later, villians in some movie, novel, or story. History may or may not be kind to these 4.
I know right? The comment about homophobes moving to Canada above is hilarious given that Canada would have approved same sex marriage 10 years earlier. It's crazy though.
Im reading this for the first time while lgbtq, especially trans, rights are under attack and Roe V Wade is about to be overturned, with Obergefell being next in line. Seeing this and knowing that this celebratory news is now in danger once more, I have to hope we can continue to hold on to this.
But this is important news and a big step forward to more international recognition!
"Dude, she's the cutest lesbian ever". ~
Fairly a year late but I was so happy to hear this news as well at the time, I remember.
