Emily seems well intentioned. This seems like she's trying to smooth things out between Chanel and Maria.
I can see how Emily is being honest with Chanel, but she is sharing her inferences and assumptions about Emily's motives in addition to what Maria actually told her.
The assumption about Maria being worried about Chanel's safety at this school seems like a reasonable assumption about why Maria wouldn't want to go public about the relationship if she loves Chanel. The part about wanting to show their love publicly? That seems like it could backfire.
Erm... could someone who's better than me at understanding social subtext say whether we saw when Maria said/subtexted that to Emily? (And if so, when?)
Also, unless you're hinting at something in the second question, I wouldn't think anything is suspicious...

http://rain.webcomic.ws/comics/449, and http://rain.webcomic.ws/comics/450.
Emily isn't shown in that first one, but she was there the prior comic and wasn't seen going anywhere.
Ehh, no harm, no foul in playing a well-intentioned cupid I suppose.
