Anyway, this starts up pretty much exactly where the previous chapter ended. It’s literally no more than ten minutes later, as Fara has talked on the phone for at least a little while, and Rain and her buddies have moved on to Fabio Cart.
Then we get to the last two panels and… well, how do you feel about this? Let’s say you’re one of Rain’s friends; just a fly on the wall for this scene. Does it bother you that Rain isn’t willing to offer shelter to her own brother, or is it sense-making given the situation? On the other hand, is it wrong for Fara to go ahead and invite Aiken anyway despite Rain’s wishes, or is she really being the better person here?
First page of the chapter, and we already get a potential zinger of a debate. I already love this chapter. ^_^
Oh hey, it's Christmas now?
I guess that makes sense, Halloween was a few chapters back
Also, while I can't really empathise with Rain very well, me being an eldest sibling and her being a youngest, I still think her refusal is totally reasonable.
It's not being a dick if it's to your siblings.
I think Fara's being a bit of a jerk, but it IS her home. Besides, unless there's some unmentioned reason to not like Aiken, Rain should totally be willing to help out family.
It can't have been easy for Fara either, having to choose either to disappoint Rain or her brother...In Rain's place I'd be rather disappointed though, I mean, why ask if you're going ahead anyway? Also, Rain might have reasons not to feel comfortable about it, just yet...
Well, here's the situation as I see it:
Rain can either deny her brother shelter in a time of need, in exchange for her own benefit. Or she can toughen up and deal with the situation, while also showing compassion to her brother.
So my opinion is that Rain is being really selfish here.
I feel bad for Rain. I live close to family that I still haven't come out to and if my uncle all of a sudden needed a place to stay and had to move in with me and my family, I'd have to either come out to him as FtM Transgender or de-transition. Neither of those things are good ideas for me. If my mom asked me if I was ok with my uncle coming to live with us, I'd definitely respond the same way as Rain did here.
If my oldest full brother needed a place to stay for a week, I'd put him up in a hotel, preferably in a city far from where I live. Rain doesn't have my resources, however, so that's not really an option for her.
She has something like 6-7 years of experience with this guy not accepting her for who she is. While some people would say that you should always support family, what's 1 week of non-support compared to 6-7 years of non-support?
Of course, I also feel Aunt Fara's choice is also a fair one, and it really is her call.
... maybe have told Aiken that Rain would be happy to see him. If he's desperate for a place to stay, he might also be more open to someone else's issues. And if Rain is going to have to be a bit uncomfortable, than he can share the joy.
Either way it's troublesome for her.
