Interesting fact: while this statistic MAY have been true at one time, upon further research, I’ve found it might actually not have much bearing anymore. Regardless of the percentages changing, the statistic itself seems to somehow remain widely accepted due to unfortunate stereotypes.

All the same, Rain interpreting this as validating herself as a woman is kind of funny though. I mean, it’s a horrible way of looking at things on her part, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t also proud of sucking at math in my high school days for the exact same reason.

Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.

Also, if you enjoy the comic, please vote for "Rain" on TopWebComics!

I am ashamed to say I didn't get why she was happy to suck at maths til I read the author's note though...xP

Also, I like the new banner ;P

Validation through the enforcement of a negative stereotype? Rain had better not mention this to any other girls.
Lex-Kat 16th Nov 2016, 10:49 AM edit delete reply
I hate to admit it, but I had a moment similar. But then I realized, it's not so much that I suck at math, as it is that math, science, and I just don't get along.

And Rudy and Rain are kinda cute together.
Drew 26th Nov 2016, 3:12 PM edit delete reply
I have the opposite. I feel validated because I'm great at math. xD (being FtM, yeah, I guess it makes sense)

Also, I'm lovin' my Rain-land look-a-like, Drew! Funny thing is we look nothing alike we just have the same name. xD I'm still happy to see a character with the same name as me.

I love the last panel. So cute!

Mathmatics and Artists don't get along. I hate math! DX
2+2= fish, mofos!
But my fiance` helped me out during my senior year of highschool--because I had a math teacher with a VERY thick Cuban accent that was so thick, even the ESOL students who spoke Spanish couldn't understand her--and I passed by a very thin hairline. Thank God he tutored me. @_@ Again, I HATE math.

As a mathematician and an artist (and a girl!), I am confused by this comment

Math is an art!
Math is beauty of abstraction.
the thing ppl hate most about math is calculating - which isn't really math at all.
math is the art to avoid calculations to the very end - to find beauty in the generalization!

i love math and art

I'm almost actually *ashamed* to say now that I was so good I literally got an A in my sleep...

I just wanna say a couple of things. If I knew a girl like Rain, I would definitely be in Rudy's shoes right now. Also, speaking of Rudy, you have created the first webcomic character that I would go gay for simply because of how cute he looks with Rain. Congrats.

Would it be unfair to say that in my experience, those 'statistics' seem to be accurate? I'm a guy, and I actually had to tutor my own mother through her college math classes. Yeah.
Sissa 4th Dec 2017, 12:33 PM edit delete reply
Anecdotal evidence has no place in an argument of statistics, so no it's not

"Statistics showed that 100% of all people who drink water, die"

And that's how statistics work XD
Albireo 20th Dec 2013, 1:18 AM edit delete reply
Ha. If those statistics were right I'd have gone for engineering as a hobby to study instead of computer science. I'd much rather program something to do math for me. :P

Dunno why but I get this feeling like the relationship might not last long, though.

So Rain and Ruby... damn, I was really shooting for Maria.
Also I totally heard Rain squeak about math in my head.
Sky Beams 29th Jul 2016, 6:46 PM edit delete reply
Ok, you know what? I used to think MariaXRain was the only OTP. But RudyXRain is too freaking cute! Maybe they're 2 OTPs now.. But I was really rooting for MariaXRain. :(

This is really ticking me off. I'm a girl, and I was the top of my class in every math class I ever took. My best friend, also female, was the second best student in all of our classes together. This is not true. Fun fact: Girls get better grades on average.
Sissa 4th Dec 2017, 12:22 PM edit delete reply
Okay I have to be honest. I love Rain, it's one of my favorite webcomics ever, but every once in a while I think back to this strip and its comments, even years later, and get really, really sad. I've had to work so damn hard to prove myself as a female mathematician. It has been shown over and over again that girls are no worse at math on average as boys (girls even score higher on the math SAT) but the fact that there are still people, as shown by this comment section, that think math is gendered actually makes me cry at night.

I remember, in the last year of primary school I and a guy in my class were working on maths work a year ahead of everyone else in our year. However, there was one other person with us doing the same work, a girl in the year below us.
So, best mathematician in our school by far (even if the oldest of us was 11 at the time) was a girl. That made me happy even if it wasn't me.

When I was in high-school I liked math and had a great teacher (female btw!) ... but in the back of my head I also felt like I also _had_ to be good at it, that if I didn't get As in math and physics then I'd just be some "girls are dumb" stereotype.

We all find ways to enjoy the perceived femininity of our faults and issues.
I’ve had type 1 diabetes all my life and if there’s one good thing it’s done for me is it stunted my growth, I’m now only 183cm (6’) tall. Yes, I know, freakishly tall girl but I was meant to be 7’ according to the percentiles. Imagine that?
Natalie H 5th Nov 2018, 6:10 PM edit delete reply
Actually, I was upset when I heard this statistic but then I remembered the only people that came close to me in my mathematics courses were girls (biological). I then started looking around and I saw teachers were actually disencouraging girls in math, science (especially physics and chemistry), and engineering. I put 2+2 together and saw the "lack of ability" for what it was.

I was very happy though to hear that girls were much better at right brain functions like creativity and languages. I have not looked any farther than the that statistic though. LOL.

Maybe Rain can use her negative grade to teach Rudy about negative numbers

Oh Rudy, you are so... 2012.

Funny, this is the page that led me to find this comic. Now re-reading this and crying...because reasons.
Waffle 14th Jun 2022, 10:20 AM edit delete reply
They do indeed say that. But from what I've heard, any validity it may have is due to girls and women being discouraged from trying and mocked for any mistakes and so on.
