So, this is my ADHD self, just itemizing everything that needs to be done in the coming months. I don't usually do stuff like this, but I'm trying something different. Like, whether I completed an 11 year comic or not, I'm still incredibly absent-minded and very prone to procrastination. So anything I can do to help myself along is probably for the better. ^^;

And I'm sharing this because I wanted to be transparent about what it is I'm doing right now, and what my goals are. The bottom line is that I want to begin My Impossible Soulmate, but I'm afraid if I jump in to that before finishing the books, they'll just never happen. So, I feel as though the books must happen first.

How long does this take, then? I don't know. In theory, if I checked off just one box everyday (not counting the ones already checked), it would take about four months, give or take. But some things will probably take longer than a day, while others can reasonably be done much, much faster.

For what it's worth the Characters Page has like 50 boxes to check off because I'm drawing new headshots for every single character (I just want the art to be consistent). They don't take long at all, but there's a ton of characters. So as is, I've just been doing a little each day.
New Headshot samples

And even My Impossible Soulmate has 12 boxes for characters, but I've already designed the central cast (so it's less about figuring out what characters look like, and more about making bios to relay the info). So this should also be fairly quick and easy.
Main cast for MIS

The other thing of potential note is the bonus chapters. I don't actually know how many pages they'll be. I have them outlined and know what needs to happen in them, but I haven't actually written the scripts themselves, so I don't know how long it'll take to cover it.

Meanwhile, I have a script written through a little more than 20 pages for MIS. Before starting to post Rain, I'd drawn about 30 pages to help me along early on, and basically I'd like to do that again to ensure a smooth start. I'd also like to mimic Rain (in a way I don't if many people will remember), by posting a page every single day for the first week to quickly get through the prologue section. On the one hand, it gives readers a fair amount to read very early on and (hopefully) offers a hook to newcomers quickly, but it also makes that early page buffer so much more valuable. XD

I don't know if anyone cares about any of this behind-the-scenes stuff as long as things come out, but again, I just wanted to be transparent. I'm hoping this will keep me accountable to do what I must without stressing myself out too much with hard release dates (hence why I'm not naming any).

Of course, if you have questions in addition to anything I've just gone over, please don't hesitate to ask. I may not be able to answer everything, but I'll do what I can for y'all. ^_^

Anyway, despite everything above, I'm still taking a break for the next couple days. I was sick this weekend and finally feeling better today, so I just want to make up for lost time and enjoy myself before diving hard into my work.

I love you all! Take care, and have a great day! ^_^

New art of long hair Rain!!!! It's been so long 🥺

Been reading for years by this point, since at least 2016. Anything I could say has been said so many times by so many people, but this comic coming to an end is crazy when I look back on how long I've read it. There's been portions of time in there I've forgotten about it and come back to a nice backlog, and I'd like to say congratulations on its general completion! One thing I've always wondered is if there will be another way to read the bonus chapters than through physical copies of the books, I've never been in a place where I'd feel safe to have the books, and I don't know if I ever will. I'd feel so uncompleted never being able to read them, maybe there's ways to give digital access to just the bonus chapters through a purchase, it'd definitely help people in my position. I completely understand if you've already decided against this or consider it a low priority, Thanks for all your work through the years!

1-You’ve earned a break Jocelyn.

2-Why is there a warning page? And why is it big enough to warrant a separate checkbox?
Jocelyn 20th Apr 2022, 12:11 PM edit delete reply

1. Thank you. I'll try my best to enjoy myself.

2. One of the bigger criticisms people had about Rain is that I didn't provide content warnings as often as I should. While there's technically a short list on the comic profile, it's very easily missed (and even then, perhaps "occasionally triggering scenes" isn't necessarily as helpful as it could be). That's entirely my bad. ^^;

The problem - for me, at least - is that while I have plenty of my own traumas and triggers (some of which, written into Rain), I don't necessarily always know which ones to address or how to present it. After a while, I started writing warnings into page blurbs before pages that talked about heavy topics. But, the first problem is not everyone reads the blurbs. And then, sometimes I make warnings for pages that get no reaction; others I don't anticipate that something might be triggering for some folks and I don't include a proper warning not realizing it's necessary.

So My Impossible Soulmate will have a dedicated warning page upfront, probably even before page 1 of the story. Something that will be harder to miss and more clear about what goes on in the story.

In terms of the level of content, I think it'll be about on par with Rain (in that PG-13 range). Cursing, but no f-bombs. Sexual topics/gags, but no nudity or depictions of actual sex. Maybe non-gratuitous depictions of blood/scars. The story will generally be very positive, but it may venture into some darker, heavier topics, that might be a little real for some. I want the warning page to address all this, but I'll probably go a little more in-depth for it, so new readers know what they're getting into. ^_^

And it has it's own checkbox, because I want to make sure it's thorough and efficient and does what I need it to do. :)

Thank you for answering and answering throughly. It stood out to me like a sore thumb so I was wondering if MIS would be heavy.

How do you write your triggers into Rain? And is challenging to do so?
Jocelyn 20th Apr 2022, 4:02 PM edit delete reply

To some degree, writing can be a bit of coping mechanism for me. I write characters struggling with things that sometimes hit very close to home. And then I write my characters trying to overcome it, and sometimes (admittedly not all the time, but sometimes), it helps me through it too. Hopefully, it offers at least a little strength to others as well. ^_^

It is a delicate balance, though. If I go in too hard, it can actually be difficult to motivate myself to write/draw it because it's just taking me back to a very taxing event in my life. But on the other hand, I think if I hold back too much, I run the risk of it being ineffective both as a plotpoint, and as a method of coping. So it can be a challenge, but I think successfully representing something like that can be rewarding. It both allows me clear my head a bit of something I've struggled with (usually for a long time), and also sheds some light on a specific situation/topic/event that others may also benefit from seeing in writing (if just to let folks know they're not alone).

Generally speaking, I maintain that my writing style veers towards being more positive overall. But speaking personally at least, I get a lot out of having those heavy moments too, so I can have my kids conquer or learn to cope with their fears/traumas/triggers (which, at times, double as my own). It's empowering for me, so I want to keep writing that way. But because not everyone necessarily heals/copes the same way, I think the warning page will still be valuable to have as well, so that folks can make their own call.

Each question leads to an answer which leads to another question.

Do you have tips on how a creator could write a character who has a different experience then they do (cis person writing a trans person, man writing a woman etc.)? What are some things to lean into, pitfalls to avoid and resources to learn from?
Jocelyn 21st Apr 2022, 8:03 AM edit delete reply

This one is kinda tricky for me. I'm an ace trans woman, and I feel like I can write any of that subset of titles fairly well, as it's just what I know. Ironically, I don't know if I've actually written a specifically ace trans woman (all in one person) before. Ace women, sure. Trans women, definitely. Ace trans women, maybe not? I'm not sure why. Maybe it's just too on the nose for me? XD

And there's some instances - particularly with antagonistic characters like Todd, Chase, Mrs. Caston, or Father Quenton - where I pull from my history of dealing with people just like them, sometimes even taking lines/actions directly inspired by things I've seen/heard. And sometimes, the more absurd the action or statement honestly makes the antagonist in question more believable (because real life lousy people can be just unbelievable sometimes).

But at times, I also have to write things that feel like they're out of my element. Like, I constantly worried about my handling of the transmasc characters like Vincent or Ryan, or if I was doing Ky and their genderfluidity justice. I've been told by readers that they found those characters relatable, but I still stressed a little about making sure I do things right. I don't want to make anyone feel like they're poorly represented, nor do I want to relegate anyone to just be a caricature. For the most part, I just talked with people I knew who identified with these labels, and did my best to work with that.

But another thing I did, was I tried to attribute what I know about my experience to those characters. Like, I might not know the transmasc experience, but I still know how it feels to be trans. Like, I know what dysphoria feels like, and although what Ryan wanted and what I wanted were two very different things, I could still write how the oppressive feeling of dysphoria felt through him. Likewise, Vincent's very popular "birthday wish" flashback page, was inspired by my own habit of wishing to be a girl on birthday cakes (not as vocally in my case, mind). So even if it is a different experience, I think finding a common ground helps (if that makes sense).

Sorry. I feel like I just kinda rambled there. I hope I actually answered your question. XD

Thank for responding. You did a great job answering my questions. Not just then but always.
Anonymous 2nd May 2022, 1:36 AM edit delete reply
You don't have to answer this if you don't want to, but I've always been curious about what the biggest changes were that you made to the story compared to the directions you originally were going to take. I don't mean the changes between the old fantasy version of Rain and the slice of life one, but just from what your original outline of the story may have been and how it turned out. Like, I saw some older art that suggests Maria was originally intended to be Rain's love interest instead of Emily. Were there other big changes like that, and what caused you to make them?
Jocelyn 2nd May 2022, 8:40 AM edit delete reply

The short version is that, yes, there's been a lot of big changes over the course of the story (up to and including Maria originally being the love interest, Emily remaining an antagonist throughout, and much more).

I'm going to opt not to go into this too much yet though. I have some plans for the future to go into big changes and abandoned arcs along the way. ;)

I perfectly understand from my own experience. I wrote one book where I wanted to include a male gay relationship, seen from the perspective of the partners - but I found I couldn't. While I'm genderfluid myself, I'm only really attracted to females (indeed, I've sometimes thought my genderfluidity was really a kind of ultimate heterosexuality: Finding the other gender so attractive you also want to be able to be it), and I just couldn't put myself in the mindset of being a male attracted to another male.
A note, knowing how things get twisted on the internet: This is NOT a criticism or condemnation of male-on-male relations - just a matter of saying they are not for me.

Will there be an F-bomb in the bonus chapters?
Like most PG-13 stories allow at least one F-bomb these days so I'm curious if that's something you would do?
There are several times in the story that an F-bomb would have fit (*cough*Marcus*cough*)
Jocelyn 21st Apr 2022, 3:46 PM edit delete reply

There were a few instances where I almost used my one allotted PG-13 f-bomb, but I kept putting it off just in case a better opportunity came up. On two separate occasions, it was almost Rain. I think two more were almost Emily. And one was almost Maria.

And there was one reader a few years back - regrettably, I don't remember who - that suggested the one f-bomb should be used by Randy in a single loud exclamation as the only thing he says in the whole comic. I found this suggestion hilarious, but I didn't actually have a place for it, and he's kinda too chill a dude for that. But I really loved the idea. XD

But I never did end up using it. I guess I didn't need it after all. I'm actually kinda happy I didn't. It might not change the rating, but it can change the atmosphere a little. I guess it's still possible it'll show up in the bonus chapters, but honestly, I kinda think it's unlikely.

That said, My Impossible Soulmate and Moonlight Wanderers bring two new opportunities for potential f-bombs, and I'll leave those on the table in case the ideal scenario for one or both of them come up, but I guess we'll have to just wait and see what happens.
Phrown 22nd Apr 2022, 9:12 AM edit delete reply
Rain swearing? Maybe. Emily? That’d be a complete surprise. Maria? Definitely. I imagine she’d have quite the mouth away from her parents.

And I find a Pokémon battle with gratuitous swearing to be hilarious.

Oh I thought Moonlight Wanderers was starting before My Impossible Soulmate! I'm happy to read what you make either way though.

It actually was the idea to launch Moonlight Wanderers first. Unfortunately, I hit a little bit of a wall. I think I'm gonna figure this out, so it's not like it's canceled or anything, but I'm just gonna focus on My Impossible Soulmate first in the meantime.

I found out about Rain only a few days ago and in that time I have utterly binged from start to finish. I can honestly say, thank you. Rain has struck many deep emotional chords that I didn't know were there. Your writing and art are both excellent. Your characters are incredible and I resonate deeply with a few of them.

An update from a post I made on 12 April;
I've finished 'This Time For Me; a Memoir' by Alexandra Billings
Yes, the ending was indeed uplifting and worthwhile. Since it's real
life, we already knew she was successful in her career, but to read
how she had grown personally, as well, was satisfying. And hopefully
some things that were expressed at different parts of the book are
opinions/attitudes she has updated personally, as well. It would fit
with the conclusions she describes at the end of the book.
Recommended, though with potential 'trigger warnings' for some people.
Jocelyn, have you had a chance to read this ? I forgot if I borrowed it from the
library or bought it ( Kindle app on my phone ).

are chapters A-F print exclusives or are they available online somewhere? cuz i want to read more but I don't have the money to spend on these kinds of things.

also where can I find your other comics
Jocelyn 1st May 2022, 10:14 PM edit delete reply

The bonus chapters are all print exclusives, and will remain as such for the foreseeable future. Sorry for the inconvenience.

None of my other comics are available to read yet, but My Impossible Soulmate will definitely launch later this year. Hopefully, Moonlight Wanderers will also. Both should be available right here on Comic Fury, and I'll be sure to announce them formally here when they launch.
