I'm assuming that sometime the clients may open up about getting bullied. Other times there's family members and friends that probably don't understand/support their transition.
I'm guessing that hearing those stories may be hard sometime, but are part of the job.
Is it weird that I guessed the patient was a girl based on red hoodie and blue pants? I wear those too... is that a common thing, I wonder...?
I notice that Fara has changed her last name to incorporate Vincent's -- Bryer-Valverde (see comic 1456) -- but Vincent has not incorporated Fara's. He's still just "Valverde."
Is there a story behind this difference? On the surface, it comes across as being a partial concession to our society's rule that a woman takes her husband's surname on marriage and the man keeps his. But maybe there's more. (I'm sure Jocelyn has thought this through.)
So, I thought of it as far as that I figured it would be important to Fara that she keep her name to retain that connection to her brother. In light of everything she learned about Lorcan, she felt closer than ever to him, and thus wanted to keep Bryer in some capacity.
But it also felt reasonable to think she'd want to take Vincent's name. I could easily imagine it wouldn't be such a big deal to Vincent either way. She could not take his name at all, and he'd be happy as long as she was happy. So if she really wanted to take his name too, he would support that. And the joint name, Bryer-Valverde, just seemed like the logical conclusion.
If I'm being 100% honest, though, I didn't consider Vincent's last name at all. I think I'm just so used to seeing husbands keep their names, I genuinely forgot he could have changed it too if he wanted. But you're absolutely right, he could have!
So I'm just creating this little bit of backstory right now in response to your question: Over a decade ago, when he'd legally changed his name to Vincent, he had a hard time doing so. Vincent was, at the time, in a financial rough patch so the fee took some time to scrounge up. And then the judge assigned to his case let it sit on his desk for months before finally addressing it. And really, the whole process just hit every roadblock along the way, only to still get mail in his old name for years (not unlike my own entire name change experience, unfortunately). Obviously, it did eventually happen, and Vincent got to have the name he wanted, but it was such an arduous, stressful experience for him, he absolutely does not want to go through it again. So when he and Fara were talking about marriage, he told her exactly that. And Fara, being the cool lady she is, was just like, "Well, keep your name then. I'm taking your name because I want to. So you should keep yours if that's what you want." And the two of them were both satisfied with that outcome.
And that's why Fara has the joint name and Vincent kept his. ^_^
Vincent's reasoning is more or less the same reasonings as to why I don't plan to take my spouse's surname, if I ever get married. (I'm single now, though. So maybe I'm thinking too far ahead.)
@Jocelyn, I find it hilarious that your icon is Rain explaining, so when you explain something in the comments it looks rlly funny. XD but seriously, this page makes me wanna be a gender therapist soooooooooo much more badly than usual. I WILL FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS VINCENT AND EMILY!!!
Its a thing that never disappears just becomes easier to handle to keep working composure from what I've read from Medical and psychological experts explaining their experiences, some saying its one of the few things that keeps them moving if they get a lot of despair moments. The feeling of saving keeps you saving even in the face of darkness.
Man also your explanation for Vincent's keeping of surname is more understandable than my "dropping it is one of the few things I think would insult the clan in forgetting where we came from" of weird pride, thou that's more of not fully adopting a new one a joint one works unless if feels weird...that I wouldn't need to worry about this as much if I wanted to marry a girl is a weird feeling.
Their transition is her cause
In all seriousness though, you're right. She's gonna be/is a great therapist, and absolutely is helping people. I love it
Prescribing far and wide
The power that's inside!
(Clients works right? I wasn't sure what gender neutral option to use)
It's you and she.
I know its her destiny.
So cute. I love it.
