Finally! After the first and second parts of the letter from the last chapter, we get to see something from the last page. I wanted to be all artsy and withhold the last page until this moment, so Kellen could directly acknowledge and talk about the contents herself while we learn that information for the first time.
I did want to believe that the first two parts were clear enough in establishing that the letter's writer - formerly known as Liriel Flaherty, and hereafter referred to as Lorcan Bryer - is indeed trans. Between the flashback correlating with the previous part, and Rain and Fara immediately switching to male pronouns for him, I didn't want for his gender identity to be seen as a mystery. Just his name. At least until such time as I was ready to share it (which is also why I started to say Mr. Bryer instead of his deadname or the chosen name we'd learn later).
I know this arc has been a bit divisive for some readers, but hopefully, I accomplished what I set out to do with this, and that y'all can appreciate it. :)
"Once, this flame-haired freedom fighter was a mild-mannered housewife! But when the tyrant Yr-Tax invaded, that housewife found the CRYSTAL OF MIGHT, containing the strength and courage of a hundred men! He became... LORCAN, THE CONQUEROOOOR!"

In the season 1 finale, Lorcan the Conqueror, Fara the Barbarian and Vincent the bumbling magician ride home over the desert on their rockethorses, having not only sent the Eastern Seaboard Tyrafortress crashing to the ground but retrieved the LOVE PRISM.
But back at the molecrawler, nothing the resistance fighters do to activate the LOVE PRISM works. As the adults argue and deliberate, Lorcan the Conqueror's youngest, a little boy who only Lorcan (the Conqueror) pays attention to since he's always shy and nervous, creeps toward the LOVE PRISM. He stares at it in awe. His hand reaches out...
A blinding flash! Everyone gapes as Rain jumps up and down, shrieking with joy, and strikes a pose in her battle dress. Freeze frame, roll credits, release toyline. In season 2 she joins the main cast as the sidekick, a bundle of glee when happy, a fountain of tears when dejected, but always indomitable.
I'd be tempted to do fan art, but I can't even draw stick figures. Do you think Aunt Fara would dress reasonably, or opt to rock the babarian's chainmail bikini? Would Rain ride on Lorcan the Conqueror's rockethorse, or would she ride Puddle, whom she could now turn into a giant and back through something something love something?
The season 2 opener was a dud, though. They did a two-parter of Rain getting a handle on her new abilities. It was this whole thing about personal growth: being true to yourself and not giving up, which fell particularly flat since this is Rain we're talking about, those are already her defining character traits. All they needed to do to make a great opener was to splurge on the animation budget and have Lorcan (THE CONQUEROR!) mess up cyborg dinosaurs big time with the sword that shoots other swords. I suppose that's marketing for you - got to showcase the new girl.
Hah. I always figured that Marc had named the kids because he's the one with the Irish surname.
Was Lorcan's grandmother Irish or something and he just never really ethnically/culturally identified with his father's Germanic side of the family despite his last name?
Of course I've no idea about Lorcan's reasoning. But I have known a number of people who identified with the culture of their spouse far more than their own, including several who selected the target culture before they found a spouse from said culture.
For what it's worth, it seems like a higher than normal percentage of the spouses of people who were going for "someone from x culture" as one of their primary selection criteria, where "x" was not "my own" are, well, difficult people. I think it's that they're so fascinated by the culture, they aren't paying as much attention to the people. Also, they're giving a lot of leeway for cultural friction and the friction they're encountering isn't always cultural.
Ahhh, that makes Rain's decision to take the name "Liriel" feel a lot less random, especially if she too knew the significance of Lorcan with regards to Kellen.
Some people think it's unrealistic or, as toquat says, that it feels forced. People are absolutely entitled to those opinions (even if I personally don't agree, I don't want to tell people what to think), but there have been a handful of mean-spirited comments. The really nasty stuff is thankfully very few and far between, though, and I'd say even most people not clicking with this development are still being civil about it.
It is not that uncommon to have multiple trans people in one family. I have a friend whose kids came out as nonbinary a while ago, and that friend recently came out as nonbinary themself.
Very agree! I feel like I know a significant number of trans parent/child combos, and even scenarios of two trans siblings. ^_^
I've been saying for years, that the number of queer and trans people out there far exceeds the currently believed statistics. There's more of us than we think, and probably, more of us in our own families too!
When Lorcan's letter first appeared in the comic, this last information wasn't revealed yet, so it appeared to the readers as if Fara and Rain were interpreting language along the lines of "sometimes I wish I was a man not a woman" and deciding that that meant he was definitely a trans man. Which is something that annoys me personally, as a nonbinary AFAB person, when it happens irl in online trans spaces. I had to be reminded that there was some information the readers didn't see that the characters did. Now that we see it too, it's clear that Fara's and Rain's reactions are totally in keeping with Lorcan's wishes; they're not deciding things for him post-mortem, or having information only the author could know beamed directly into their little cartoon brains. <3
The earlier pages didn’t feel like the gender identity wasn’t made explicit enough to me. It felt like Rain’s dad was questioning his gender not outright figured it out and decreed it that he was a man yet, going exclusively on what we saw in the letter at that point. Rain and Fara were calling him dad already but people can misinterpret things to what makes them happy / fit their desired narrative. Rain desiring the possibility of a secretly having a family member share something so big to her could skew her interpretation.
I think Kellen is in the similar boat that I was. The understand when told by third parties it’s a possibly and even likely, but hearing it from the horses mouth directly is the only way to let it be 100% certainty.
Hey, "Mack" in the comments of strip 1476 mentioned having identity issues and not finding somewhere good to vent. "Any ideas please I need help" they said. I'm the wrong person to field that question, so could you lot please help them out?
I mean, technically, sure. But it's not like it's ending on Wednesday. Or this week. Or next week. Try not to stress out about the end too much. There's more scenes I want to share before the last page, so we're not there yet. :)
I have a question! How many more pages will there be left in rain or when will it end I discovered this comic just when I needed it after being abused on the bus with a older man thank you so much unintentionally you helped me go out of the shadow and into the light. Thanks, Your biggest fan
I'm hesitant to name a specific end date so people aren't just counting down to the end (and I haven't exactly drawn it all yet so my projection might not be 100% accurate anyway). But I can confirm there's definitely still at least over a month to go.
i like the thematic importance of it being Kellen who read the last letter. the one who struggled the hardest with accepting trans people not only being the one to actively read about her own father's reality, but then instantly correcting herself when she accidentally misgenders him, and having that connection with his name. amazing storytelling Jocelyn.
Ok, I get doing the "artsy" thing with the last page, and now that we have a fuller picture, I feel like I get it now. I wonder if part of the issue was the format of this being a web comic. Now you can get from the start of the letter to this page within a continuous reading session, but having the four month gap between seeing what's on the second and third pages made it harder for me to see it for what it was. It didn't help that I read the author notes for the comic after the second page as taunting me over not being able to see the page.
Or maybe it's just that I had found the comic, and finally caught up, right as that story arc was starting, so it was the first real cliffhanger I had with the story.
https://rain.thecomicseries.com/comics/3 In the 3rd strip, as Lorcan said, "it just doesn't work that way", he must've been thinking, "and if it did work that way, then you couldn't be like me because I'd be your dad". It's too bad we can't have any more rain delays, because that would be really amusing.
And I love the reason why Liriel took his deadname.
Nah. Just Irish. ^_^
Rain is a demigod confirmed.

I cry often now because I can
I didn't expect that reveal from Kellen about the name
This is going to be an emotional week
The name I chose for myself is the name I would have given (but we picked another one) to my afab children, so this is very relatable to me.
I'm neutral.
