And he's a teacher too. If you're completely taken aback and didn't see this coming, we'll go over his reasoning in the next couple pages. This wasn't really foreshadowed or anything (as I've said before, I rarely - if ever - focused on what these kids wanted to do), so don't feel bad if you didn't call it. It does make sense for him though. I know people often relegate Rudy to being little more than an embodiment of chaos and silliness (and yeah, kinda). But also, he's a smart kid and wants to see people being their best selves.
If you're gonna point out, "isn't he a little young to be a teacher?" The answer is a resounding "nope". When I was in tenth grade (repeating Biology after flunking it the previous year), my new teacher was likewise a 22-year old man, just out of college, teaching on his own for the first time. And he was the best science teacher I ever had. I like to think Rudy could actually be a pretty good teacher just like him. ^_^
And if you're wondering about every other character now... Well, patience, my friends. ^_^
For now, enjoy the next few pages of Rudy and Fara.
To reflect some of the other comments further down, Are we going to learn which school they're both teaching at? If it's St H's the place must have seriously changed for Rudy to be teaching there.
Young teachers are awesome! My best teacher ever in highschool was also a young man who taught geography from the perspective of someone only a few years older than me who had actually travelled and made me realise it was possible. (Thank you Mr Clive, you were great!)
I was surprised at first. Then I read your reasoning and realized I only assumed he wouldn’t go for a “serious job”.
That said I bet he also performs in drag. He loves outfits and costumes, he has a female side he loves expressing and his sister even knows a performer to get his foot in the door.
I'm absolutely loving the implication here that Rudy and Fara are co-workers (as it kinda seems like Fara called in from her work, as it's during the day and Rain was just in the middle of wrapping up a recording, while presumably Lydia is at school as well)
My best friend and her husband are both teachers and they've been teaching for several years now, my best friend was around 24 when she started teaching
So Rudy being a teacher at 22 is plenty realistic
Interesting... Makes me wonder if a character we thought was done in the story after graduation may make another appearance... Is Fara still at St. Hallvard?
So.... are we also gonna get to see _Ruby_ again too? 💃🏻 😁
And please tell us Rudy teaches at a public school or at least a non-religious private school where he has much more freedom and better resources at his disposal to mitigate any institiutional prejudice/discrimination/oppression coming from the administration/ownerership.
We have time skipped from 2013 to 2019, I believe are the dates. There was a decent amount of progress that occurred over that time, and with people like Brother Arthur and Fara willing to help nudge things along, I can definitely see that place having taken a turn for the better over the years
I'm almost wondering with that hairstyle, if the two personas have merged some.... And I swear I saw that exact hairstyle on someone else earlier in the comic, and I want to think it was Maria. In my mind, it's definitely after the slight drawing style change.
Science teacher really makes sense to me; I had a science teacher in y7 and y8 who had a lot of chaotic energy. He was very much part of the group and did whatever he wanted- once we just watched Reggae Shark in a lesson. When his kettle broke, he made his coffee with a bunsen burner. He was also Welsh.
Ah I see so this is the route you're going with. The "show different people popping up on the MC's road to the conclusion scene" ending style. I like it.
I love Rudy being a teacher! I have fond memories of some of my teachers who had great senses of humor. Also digging his style. To be fair, 22 isn't too young to be a teacher, but it does make him a very young teacher
Everybody starts doing their job at an age. Unless they have opted for a career path change, they're usually a "very young" whatever they are when they are still at that age.
The fact that he's a SCIENCE teacher, especially, makes this worse for me. Seriously, is there anyone more closely embodying the concept of chaos and silliness than a Science Teacher??
Look at Chaos math, and how it has so many practical applications in the study and short-term prediction of weather, oceanic currents, climate... everything up past complex orbital dynamics to nebula evolution and galactic megaclusters, or down to industrial processes such as alloy creation.
I think you'll find that "science teacher to **teenagers**" is as absolutely perfect a role for such a chaotic-yet-good-hearted person.
Here in Ontario, since OAC's (and before that, Grade 13) were eliminated, you'd typically start University at around 18. Standard requirement for teachers is a 4-year degree + a 2-year B.Ed, but several schools offer concurrent programs, so being a first-year teacher at 22 is certainly possible. I'm not sure how common it is, though, vs. doing them consecutively, or doing like my friend did and working for a couple of years in between.
My math teacher my freshman year of high school was something like 25, and she'd been teaching on her own for several years, so she probably started around 22 or so.
Huh I guess school works differently in the States. I don’t think it’s possible to be a teacher this early in Canada unless you graduated high school early.
I'm not surprised he's a teacher--he's very extroverted and it makes sense he'd want to do something like that. I am surprised he went with science, though, I always thought of Rudy as more of an arts guy.
"Embodiment of chaos and silliness" is fit to describe two subjects of teachers, and Fara's already one of them, so Rudy ending up in the other doesn't particularly surprise me.
noooooooooo I wanna know about everyone ASAP ;_;

Rudy being Rudy, I guess 🤷🏻♀️💖
I can't think what the others are
That said I bet he also performs in drag. He loves outfits and costumes, he has a female side he loves expressing and his sister even knows a performer to get his foot in the door.

The only room at my school that had as many holes in the drop ceiling was the tech room with the disk grinder
And please tell us Rudy teaches at a public school or at least a non-religious private school where he has much more freedom and better resources at his disposal to mitigate any institiutional prejudice/discrimination/oppression coming from the administration/ownerership.
I mean, they hired fara, and she is bisexual.
Then again, that might not have been widely known
But that's my opinion
Best teacher I ever had.

Is Rudy teaching general science or a specialized branch? i.e Biology/Chemistry/Physics et al
Dunno if I'm more shocked he became a teacher... or that he's not a teacher and doing it as Ruby.
Somehow I can see him showing up for work first day in a hot teacher outfit just to screw with his class minds.
