Chiaki and Fumiko have been best friends since kindergarten. But they were as different as could be. Fumiko was always one of the top students in her grade, very athletic, and considered to be pretty by most of her class. Chiaki meanwhile, was not a good student, was always daydreaming about something, and was mostly invisible to her other classmates. The two had almost nothing in common, but they got along and made each other laugh. And that was enough... for Fumiko.
Chiaki, though, realized it was more than that. And around when they started high school, it occurred to her she'd developed a crush on her best friend. Too afraid to ruin what they already had, she kept it to herself. But then Fumiko would start dating one of the most popular guys in the school, and Chiaki hated him. Unfortunately, she couldn't honestly tell if it was just because he was with the girl she liked, or if she just knew he was a genuinely bad fit for Fumiko.
One day before school, Chiaki arrived to find Fumiko in tears and the couple arguing outside the school gates. Ready to give a piece of her mind to her bestie's boyfriend, Chiaki approached. And from there... something unexpected happened.

If Rain was a comedy/drama with romantic elements in it, I would actually classify My Impossible Soulmate as a romance with comedic/dramatic (and other) elements. It's hard to explain what the difference is, but I think it'll make more sense when it gets going. It's very similar to Rain in some ways (LGBT-positive characters who are fun and relatable, with a layered, twisty, and emotional story), but also very different in ways I'm choosing to be coy and discreet about for now. ;)
What I will say is that Chiaki and Fumiko exist in the same story universe as Rain (the Rainverse, if you will). But what does that actually mean? Does that make this a sequel? Will we see Rain characters or references? You may or may not have picked up on one or two things, but for the time being my lips are sealed. Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long, though. ^_^
While Moonlight Wanderers will probably start first, I would like to see My Impossible Soulmate begin in 2022 as well, after Rain is over. This and MW will probably run parallel to each other for a while (these are main projects after Rain). However, this is not planned to be a particularly long story and shouldn't last 11 years or anything (you know, just for the sake of argument), but I think it's gonna be super fun, and it's something I really want to share with you all. So I hope you'll look forward to this as well.

Questions, comments, thoughts, early theories, etc? I'd love to hear them. ^_^
I’m calling it now: the Chiaki in this story is the same as the author of Black Wings Kaminari, Chiaki Koizumi. If I’m wrong, oh well. If I’m right, then I’m ahead of the game B)
What if Black Wings Kaminari is like the authors way relating their(her?) life to a comic. Could explain why there was like chemistry between 2 female characters that was just, was it Maria's headcanon? Maybe the publisher didnt that that'd sell and edited it? Like all this in universe btw.
I had expected the Moonlight Wanderers announcement and already knew I would be following that one for sure given my love of Pokémon. This announcement is a genuine surprise, however, since (as I recall) you haven't hinted at this story before. It sounds promising, and I'm looking forward to it!
I've noticed that Fumiko is only referred to by name, or in tandem with someone else. Are you trying to disguise Fumiko's pronouns? I know you refer to them as a girl in this sentence: "Unfortunately, she couldn't honestly tell if it was just because he was with the girl she liked, or if she just knew he was a genuinely bad fit for Fumiko.", but it still feels somewhat conspicuous.
Fumiko is at one point stated to be, "...pretty by most of their class". Which could be using plural to refer to both Fumiko and Chiaka, but given as Chiaka's matching sentence uses the singular, "invisible to her classmates", it seems to me like one gender neutral pronoun has slipped in in reference to Fumiko.
To confirm, I meant "their" as plural including Fumiko and Chiaki (as they are in the same class), and didn't realize I changed tense when describing Chiaki's situation. That was not intentional, and I've gone back and fixed this.
That said, there is an enby character. It's just not Fumiko. I'm very sorry for the confusion, either way. ^^;
I look forward to seeing what kind of twists this story will have
2022 is going to be a fun year with Moonlight Wanderers and My impossible soulmate
Can't wait
Given the title, normally I'd guess some sort of soul bond between Chiaki and Boyfriend, but this is Rainverse where magic isn't real (as far as we know) and even if it were you're not the sort of artist to *force* a love triangle so... I'm betting Fumiko or her boyfriend are trans and been supporting each other through self-discovery and transition in secret?
Well, Jocelyn has previously stated that her Magical Girls series takes place in the Rain universe (remember Carmen back in the chapter where Rain gets her hormones), so magic isn’t out of the realm of possibility!
Does this actually take place in Japan? Also if that is the case, are most people gonna be using each others last names and also the suffixes like San, Sama, Chan, Kun, Senpai, Kohai?
"If Rain was a comedy/drama with romantic elements in it, I would actually classify My Impossible Soulmate as a romance with comedic/dramatic (and other) elements."
To put it another way, would you say Rain is "His and Her Circumstances" the anime, and My Impossible Soulmate is "His and Her Circumstances" the manga?
This looks like a great comic. I’ll definitely be reading it.
Prediction time so I can be ahead of the curve (if I’m right):
IS
-Fumiko turns out to be pregnant
-there’s magic powers in IS. So Fumiko and Chiaki have to navigate a relationship while dealing with the world changing around them
Rain
-the last chapter takes place after a time skip and shows everyone’s lives after high school
-Kellan shaves her head to try to atone for Rain
-Maria and Chanel’s relationship lasts forever. Even if they were to break up, they’d still have an unbreakable bond and support each other.
-Rudy becomes a drag Queen
I predict that the former headmaster from Rain's school was transferred to Chiaki&Fumiko's school, is out for blood, and ends up falling down a set of stairs the very first time he tries causing trouble.
Because everyone hated him, and nobody told him about stairs.
I'd read that.
