Oh! So, it's not empty!

A lot of people called the letter (though, the header accuracy varies), but I was actually surprised to see no one call the ribbon (as far as I saw). I always meant for it to be a prominent feature on Liriel; even when we can't see her face, the ribbon itself tends to remain in view. But in hindsight, maybe it didn't pop as much to most people due to Liriel only appearing so rarely, and only in colorless flashbacks (comicking lessons I'll take into future stories).

As a fun fact: Going way back to the original fantasy concept for the story, Rain used to always wear a purple ribbon in her hair as a keepsake of her late mother. Sure enough, it's there, and even in super old art, it was just always a staple of Rain's design back then. I know not everyone's seen that old art, but I still wondered if those old drawings would give this away. Anyway, when I changed the story to be slice-of-life, I took the ribbon away from Rain, feeling it might seem an odd look in a modern "real world" setting. Some part of me always regretted that, though, so it's nice to see it return to Rain after all this time.

I wonder if Liriel was really giving it as a gift, though, or if it was just something nice that was lying around and could be used to tie up the box.

Anyway, next time: the letter!

(Also: I may recommend keeping a box of tissues nearby for the entirety of next week!)

Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.

Last week, I had three our of four of my back molars pulled. Once again, much thanks to all of you who've donated to or shared my GoFundMe to help make this possible. Unfortunately, this is still not the end. It's a big step, but my mouth still needs a lot of work. So don't forget, you can still help right here at this link.

I actually do recall the ribbon from before. But why the more cliff hanger. I know it's not super dramatic, but now I wanna know what's in that letter. Stupid waiting.

Maybe a warning that the next update will primarily be a wall of text?

If you're not used to this comic's relaxed pace by now I'm impressed you made it this far XD

Just bought stock in J&J. I'm ready for this wave of tissue sales. 😂😭😂😭

I love that rain put the ribbon on her wrist right away. Before even opening the box. Really shows how much that ribbon meant. ❤️

Thanks for the heads up on the tissues.

It's looking like I'm about to lose my (abusive) father to COVID this week. I doubt there's any reconciliation waiting for me in a will, but this chapter is definitely hitting a lot harder for my situation this week.

I'm so glad Rain is getting some peace and closure, and hopefully some posthumous support. She deserves it, and Liriel deserves for her daughter to know she loved her.

Heya Ribbon, I can’t know how you’re feeling and how you’ll respond to the next few pages of the comic, but I want you to take care of yourself and your emotions. If you think reading about Liriel posthumously supporting Rain would trigger too many harsh emotions in this tough time, then I want you to wait to read it. That’s the good thing about this sort of comic posted on the internet, you can close the website for a week, or a month, or however long it takes to begin your healing process, and this will still be posted here when you’re feeling ready. Jocelyn said that this will be an emotional chapter, but I doubt she wants any one of her readers to suffer.
Also, try not to beat yourself up in the coming weeks for any conflicting emotions you might have. Everything you feel is perfectly valid because you are feeling it, and no one else truly knows what it is like to be you in this situation. If you need help sorting through your emotions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to a therapist. I don’t know you, but I don’t want you to hurt unnecessary.

I’m sorry for calling you Ribbon, Tesset. I was thinking about Jocelyn’s commentary and my brain got confused. My support still applies.

Hehe, Ribbon is a cute (nick)name, I like it :)

I'm a big girl, I can handle things. If nothing else, i've got a strong support system behind me, so I'll have others to lean on. If anything I expect that this next week will be cathartic. That's the Greek ideal, right?; feel the emotions portrayed on stage so you can handle them in your life. I think this will be good, and I'm enjoying this penultimate chapter of Rain a lot :)

i like how the letter is gender neutral, because Liriel did not know if Rain would be out yet, living as a woman, but knew that not saying “son” would be affirming. It shows that just as Fara predicted, Liriel cared about her child no matter the gender.

As long as the Zero's are in front of another number thats good.
Phrown 5th Nov 2021, 11:37 AM edit delete reply
The ideal situation is for the zeroes to be in front of a number (besides zero) and behind a decimal.
Some Ed 5th Nov 2021, 1:16 PM edit delete reply
I think you two are orienting your text differently than I do.

As this comic uses US conventions for these things, it's my hope that there's a non-zero digit to the left of the zeroes, and a decimal point to their right. I understand that different places have different conventions, and different people talk about things in different ways, and that's OK. But sometimes it feels a bit disorienting to see it.

Good comic. It’s a relief to see Rain get her inheritance without any drama.

Also this comic reminds me of my mom. When she dying she made sure to invest her money in the best possible account for us.

Heya, I gotta say I've been loving Rain's outfit this chapter. She's been looking very good in it. :)

Also big _ouch_ on your teeth situation, having three molars pulled? Were they not wisdom teeth but regular ones? I can only relate to this from having wisdom teeth pulled and those were one at a time. Three sounds rough, especially if this implies this was on both sides at once D:

Aaaand lastly I think a small typo, at the top of the second page here Fara says "It's not for me [to] open." where presumably the [to] was meant to be in there. c:
Some Ed 5th Nov 2021, 1:29 PM edit delete reply
I've heard of wisdom teeth being called back molars, because they technically are, it's just they come in late. That said, I've heard of people not having enough room in their mouth even for their normal onset second wave teeth, and people having their back-most non-wisdom teeth pulled instead of their wisdom teeth to make room, because of the relative conditions of the various teeth.

So I've little idea of what's going on in Jocelyn's mouth apart from it hurts, it's expensive, and it's towards the back.

I can't really relate, as I've been rather lucky with my teeth. But I do have some experience with pain.

I'd guess there should either be a 'to' or a comma. That said, it's my impression Fara's not prone to issuing casual orders, so 'to' would be more likely.

I CRIED SO HARD WHEN SHE PUT THE RIBBON ON HER WRIST!!! 😭

Ok, so. (TW: Domestic abuse) Way tmi, but fun fact: My biological father was a monster. When my mother left him, she tied a purple ribbon around the neck of her guitar as a sign of solidarity to other abuse survivors. Fast forward to my teens, my mom gave me her guitar. The ribbon was still on it, then, and it's still in it now. Some... ....*mumbles* years later. So! The concept of mothers passing ribbons to their daughters always hits my feels extra hard. ...Because I still have my mother's ribbon right where she left it. On my first guitar.

Uhh Jocelyn the waterworks are already on. At this rate I'll being going through a whole tree's worth of tissues. My mum had cancer a few years ago and although she survived, she still has lots of health problems. Obviously I worry about her and this plotline about Liriel has resonated with me.

Is there a particular reason we don't get to see Melissa's face? It feels deliberate.

It seems like it's a general cash inheritance rather than designated for anything specific. So it'll be for whatever Rain wants it to be for, perhaps including that!

I'm finally caught up. I found this linked on reddit, and spent the better part of a month reading through this from the start (including bonus pages and blurbs). I've been on a binge of webcomics while I figure myself out, and I really enjoyed going through this one.

I'm thinking about going back and making comments on old pages where they would be more relevant, though I don't know how much those comments would just be buried. I will point out one thing I noticed here, though: Starting on page 817 (comicfury numbering) going backwards, almost all of the page links in the Author Notes / Blurbs are off, and link to one page after where they are supposed to. (There are a few exceptions, but only when they link to very early pages, like prologue pages). I'm guessing that an early page (probably a bonus page) was removed from here, which shifted all the numbers and therefore all the links. I get that's a lot of pages to have to go through, so I understand if you don't want to go back to fix it, but I did want to make sure you knew about it.

Just an unimportant note: that check is NOT from Liriel.

The physical check. The piece of paper. The ink in the signature. (The money the check represents is a separate thing, and that's from Liriel.)

A check is valid for only a certain amount of time from when it's written, and the person writing it has to have been alive when it was allegedly written. Any check written by Liriel would be void long before Rain's 18th birthday - and the attorney who prepared the will would have told her that before she tried leaving a check. Also, she wouldn't know, when writing the check, how much money would be left after she dies.

Instead, the check is most likely a cashier's check prepared by the bank holding the trust account. Alternatively, it could have been written by the trustee or conservator - who may or may not be the same person as the executor.

And the fact that the check was ready and in an envelope tells me that this meeting was scheduled at least a day or two in advance.

only 3 panels here without the ribbon, seems like the ribbon is important then?

Not certain you'd want to go back and redo the flashbacks, but one idea, if you want something to stand out, is a splash of color on just one thing. Or I've also seen muted color used for that effect to be a bit more subtle. For an example of the standout feature with a splash of color, see the comic Boy in Pink Earmuffs. With the exception of a few special pages, and Danny's earmuffs, the entire comic is in black and white.
