A rare, distant shot of Liriel and Fara's parents in panel 2 (by extension, Rain's grandparents). They sucked as parents themselves. I've never brought them up in the comic, because I just imagined they too weren't around anymore either. Perhaps before Rain was even born. Liriel might've potentially been a positive figure in Rain's life, but her grandparents unfortunately don't seem they would've been much help to her. They certainly didn't do any favors to Liriel and Fara.

Speaking of Liriel, though... thoughts?

Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.

My next round of dental work is currently slated for November, but as I've discussed, I've still got a lot to save. If you can help, I will be very grateful. If not, no hard feelings. Thank you, either way.

Wow. I wasn’t expecting this. It would have been nice if Liriel somehow turned out not to be dead after all, but I don’t think this is that kind of comic.

Also, I’ve said this before, but I feel really bad for Fara. She just looks so guilty and mad at herself. I feel like we don’t give Fara enough credit sometimes, but now I kinda feel a similar way about Liriel. They both seem like wonderful allies.

Which means Liriel would probably have been a lot like many parents of trans children: initially disbelieving and confused, but led by their desire for their children to be happy to learn more and try to understand, and ultimately becoming strong advocates for their trans children.

Fara went through some of this when Rain first came out to her, and it was her determination to make Rain happy that led her to support her.

I think this conversation is done extremely well. It's at least more or less true to my own experiences. That the people in our lives even if they love and support us unconditionally, are also tied up in their own relationships to other people, which can make them act in ways for the benefit of other people.

For my own personal experience I'd say this probably hits the nail on the head for my own passed father. I think on his own in isolation would have been unconditionally supportive and loving of me. But given that his relationships to other people in my family felt extremely toxic for him, it's hard to say what he would have done with the pressure of others bearing down on him.

This comic is extraordinarily well done. I especially appreciated the last authors note talking about how Rain has probably asked the question many different times. Because it's a question I've wanted to ask so many people, only to stop myself because I realized that I was going to get the opinion of whoever I asked and not the real answer.

But I think at least in my situation, your comic was exactly spot on. In that if left on his own he in his heart of hearts would have supported me unconditionally even if he didn't understand or was awkward about it. But at the same time there were a lot of toxic influences, and despite what he may have wanted, there's a good chance that he wouldn't have been able to show it or show it completely.

Boy this makes me feel sorry for Liriel. Wanting to be supportive but feeling forced by bad people around her to pretend not to be.

People in that situation have it worse than you seem to think.

Many times, even if they do what they feel they're able to show support, it comes across as an attack, because of how many people actually *do* attack by showing false concern for the person's safety in the presence of others.

There are so many words and phrases that we can't say supportively, because they've been used to attack too frequently. At least *I'm* in a position where I can find out about them, because I have close friends who are properly in the trans community, I read trans web comics, and I follow trans people online.

Liriel, on the other hand, only knew one trans person and one ally. It would seem to some people like she'd just need to get away from her husband a bit to ask them about more supportive words.

But abusers like Rain's father make that difficult. When he's working, Rain and Fara were busy with school or working. The rest of the time, he's there, and any attempt she may have made to get some time away from him would be perceived as a threat to him.

It's easy to imagine her just making a phone call while he's out of the house. But I've heard from multiple people who've been in such abusive situations that just being on the phone when he got home could be a trigger for abuse.

Early on, Rain was living in their house, but I do seem to recall seeing at least one flashback that suggested Liriel just spending time in Rain's room making an attempt to be the slightest bit supportive resulted in words from her father.

Not really about the comic itself, but wow. Rain really looks a lot like her mother. I just thought that was kinda cute.

Ooh! Nice catch! I wasn't sure if anyone was actually going to pick up on that reference, or if that was just a callback for myself. ^_^

Wait, was Rain originally going to be a fantasy comic?
Jocelyn 20th Oct 2021, 7:55 PM edit delete reply

That was the original plan for the story, going way to before the comic as we know it now began. Unfortunately, it had a lot of problems and never really got off the ground (clunky writing from inexperience, and somewhat problematic from me being super closeted and not really understanding LGBT issues yet). Anyway, when I finally felt ready to try again with the story, I decided to simplify things by making it slice-of-life. A lot of the same ideas, themes, and characters remain - some plot beats too! - but some of it had to be at least a little repurposed for a new setting. Rain is pretty adaptable, though. XD

I don't have a lot of material from that time anymore, but here's something. :)

But to clarify, Fara's line referring to Liriel as "practically a saint" actually is a callback. If I remember correctly, Liriel was not a saint yet, but she was being considered for it, being kind of this hero and well-respected legend (whose reputation gave Rain a very tough act to follow). So having Liriel gain that title again felt fitting. ^_^

Was fantasy Rain going to have a similar scene to when her hair was cut?
bgb16999 20th Oct 2021, 5:55 PM edit delete reply
I'm glad you pointed it out 'cause I missed it.

Is this the first time Marcus has appeared (even as a sillouette) in two different scenes in the same chapter?

Sometimes, its the thought that counts.

Honestly, every time I've seen his silhouette, Rain's father always gives off the worst Gendo Ikari vibes... sheesh, honestly makes me hate him more. Honestly tho, at least Gendo used to seem like he wasn't just a terrible person.
masterbladero 21st Oct 2021, 8:35 AM edit delete reply
Gendo at least had genuine love for his wife, her death pushing him down his path, and was more distant to avoid pain (and understanding he ain't good as father) while Marcus outright left her while she was dying and was far more active in personal malicious actions. And Gendo certainly doesn't care about what Shinji has with Kaworu compared to the take it off scene.

While Marcus could have more than the before death realisation and apology to make up for it I doubt he will.

I love Rain's outfit. I wish I could buy a dress like that.

(And that I had enough of my own hair to put in those cute hair clips. I'm not sure I had hair that thick even before testosterone screwed up my body.)

Being surrounded by such people can make it hard to be supportive openly.

At least Liriel seemed to be open earlier than I was in showing concern.

You never know how a parent will react until they do. I lived in fear for over 4 decades not telling my parents. Then my 6 year old came out to us, and I watched my father just seamlessly accept her as his granddaughter, instead of the grandson he'd thought she was. I came out to them almost a year later, and while it was more difficult because of decades of living as a different identity, I was accepted by my parents.
