What's your approach to acceptance of canon (whether it's regarding ships or any other major development in a story)? Are you like Rain, who prefers to accept the author's vision no matter where it goes? Or are you more like Maria, who is more supportive of canon when it supports her headcanon?

I'm more like Rain in this instance myself. I've certainly disliked canon pairings and developments in other media myself, but I rarely challenge it. I might complain that something did or didn't happen in a story - that a plot point falls flat or feels cheap or that a pairing comes off as forced and undeveloped - but I don't tend to deny that something happened just because I'm not into it.

I don't know that there's necessarily a wrong answer (except maybe harassing or attacking the author because you don't like what they did; that's definitely always the wrong answer!), but thankfully neither Rain nor Maria (or any of my kids) are like that. But I dunno, let's discuss some meta. XD

Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.

My next round of dental work is currently slated for November, but as I've discussed, I've still got a lot to save. If you can help, I will be very grateful. If not, no hard feelings. Thank you, either way.

I'm fine with Canon but if it doesn't make sense I will reject the Canon

In shows with multiple possible pairs I like to get as many pairings as possible though the characters. So when there is a canon pairing I feel the need to complain on who gets left out in the plan

I generally accept the canon if I can see the sense of it buuuuuuut that doesn't stop me imagining other pairings. Lol
By the way, thank you for Rain 😊 I am thoroughly enjoying the series 💕

When it comes to Canon, I accept the multi-Canon theory/multiverse theory where multiple canons can be true, particularly when you have multiple depictions of the same events like when you have an anime/manga/novel/movie adaptation of one into the other(s).

For independent creator owned media like Rain, I go with whatever happens in canon. For corporate owned franchises, I have a hard time thinking of anything as "canon." For nominally creator owned media that still needs everything to be approved by a traditional major publisher, I admit I don't read or watch enough of those stories to have a "usual" tendency.

I generally support the canon. If it turns out to be something that just shows up out of the blue and makes no sense - for instance if two characters were either like siblings or had no connection whatsoever and then suddenly they're lovers - I do consider it poor writing, but I don't like writing fanfiction of other people's characters.

I'm usually not that passionate about ships. But I view Madoka: Rebellion as A/U fanfic by the original creators (i.e., it's an interesting continuation, but not THE continuation), and the very end of the manga Karin is bad and should feel bad, violating the entire theme of the series; fortunately nothing is lost if you just ignore it.

My most recent experience biases me because I just watched Nagi-Asu: A Lull in the Sea, and basically the core crux of that entire story was the main character learning how to be supportive of the people in his life making relationship decisions that might take them further away from him. Basically the main characters of the story are aquatic humans, and relationships with surface-dwellers are banned on threat of exile in the sea village because children conceived between sea people and surface people don't inherit the ability to survive in water. The main character's sister and childhood crush both have romantic prospects on the surface, and the main character's arc is basically about learning to be supportive of those relationships for the sake of his loved ones' happiness even though on an emotional level he wants to keep those people in his life and in their original village together.

But I have to assume there was a writer change in season 2 or something, because despite rebuking the main character's feelings multiple times in season 1, she ends up saying she liked him all along, and her surface romance prospect ends up with someone else??? Which, like. Among every other issue, thanks for wasting all that character development.

So yeah, I disagree with canon sometimes.

I support canon pairings as the most *likely* ones to happen. But I also like to fantasize about alternatives just for fun.

I'm in Maria's camp, except woth reading as opposed to writing :p

I didn't do the shipping thing until the last couple of years but I largely support both canon ships and alt ships. Usually canon ships have the story to support them but that doesn't stop me from also wanting a character to exist in an alt universe with the other pairing. RWBY and She-ra being my first points of having preferences regardless of canon or being supportive of the canon.

Although I guess my first experience was Twilight (the books!) where I just wanted her to pick them both and be poly cause the series pushed her toward Edward and I liked that and then the 2nd book pushed her toward Jacob and I really dug that. So most of the times these days if a triangle comes up and the characters are at the "PICK ONE" I'm sitting here screaming at the TV for them to just be poly. Ethically of course, with consent but DATE THEM BOTH!

I think I tend to go with the original canon ships. If they reboot the franchise and do something different, and it's not my personal ships either, I tend to have a difficult time with it. There've been some deviations from that, but I can't think of them off-hand.

I understand that reboots that change substantive relationship interests and things like that tend to be corporate-owned franchises, but it's not exclusive to them, and there have been corporate-owned franchises that have done reboots changed nigh everything but the names and relationships and I was surprisingly fine with that. This, despite having noped out on Smallville at just the premise, before any relationship anything happened.

Could this be… a foreshadowing? A character allegory? A chance for an old ship to enter canon?

I kind of hope not. Rainily is a enough ships for me in one comic.
Phrown 3rd Sep 2021, 4:38 PM edit delete reply
A series’ characters are the property of that series and/or their creator. So any canon ships definitely happened. They can be terrible, sudden or flat, but they still exist.

The good thing is that there’s fan fics to explore other relationships. Because everyone is going to feel that their ship is the OTP. Just remember that you’re playing with someone else’s property ie. treat them with respect.

i rarely enjoy canon ships as most ships are hetero and i honest to god cannot find any joy in hetero storylines. the only one i do like isnt canon lol
BreeYark 3rd Sep 2021, 5:47 PM edit delete reply
I'm on both sides in different cases. I also like it when fandoms kinda keep things open and ambiguous so that different ships are neither really confirmed nor disconfirmed. Sometimes I know my headcanons are silly and just for me and don't really conform to the story except to make things more enjoyable for me, and other times I think my headcanons are nice additions to the story that other folks should at least entertain as possible even if they don't agree ...

I will generally support whatever canon does, but I don't see the harm in people shipping characters (usually).

The only times I will put my foot down is if a relationship would A) go against a character's canon sexual orientation, B) The relationship itself would be blatantly abusive towards one or both parties, or C) The characters would need to be completely different people in order for the ship to work.

So for example, I don't have an issue with the Canon pairing of Naruto x Sasuke from "Naruto" because it makes reasonable sense with who the characters are and would probably be a very loving relationship based on the way canon ended. On the other hand, I have a really hard time seeing a Midoriya x Katsuki dynamic from "My Hero Academia" because the way the latter treats the former is downright abusive (yes, I know he's had character development since then and even apologized, but I still don't like it).

I am usually fine with canon ships except for in specific instances where there is a very obviously much better pairing that it makes literally no sense for them not to go with *cough couch* Yuki X Kakeru *cough cough*

I personally agree with Canon, unless it doesn't make sense.
steamedxing 3rd Sep 2021, 7:02 PM edit delete reply
I'm like in between. Like, I'm usually against the mindset of "I don't like this so it's non canon." I'll accept something as canon whether I actually think it was good or not. However, I'm also not opposed to writing or reading fics where it goes in a direction I prefer. Most of my ships are crack and/or polyam ships anyway though, so I'm not usually in a situation where I'm hoping my ship becomes canon. I can usually vibe with the canon ship if it's written well, even if I prefer another.
naobilynn 3rd Sep 2021, 9:01 PM edit delete reply
Eh, canon is canon. Headcanon is headcanon. They're separate things for me. They can both exist and neither is wrong. I do enjoy fanfics because I like seeing others take on the original work. I like the original work as well. Even if I disagree with a canon plot point it doesn't stop it from being canon, I just lean on my headcanon or pretend the plot point doesn't exist. An example being fred weasley dying. For ships, I tend to prefer established friends becoming couples so I'm not interested in alot of relationships in books and comics. Doesn't change the canon though. I dunno, I guess I just let things be but make stories in my own head that I don't mention to others cause it's my story and I don't want them nitpicking.

as far as ships are concerned i accept canon but if a pairing makes internal sense to me (aka, if it has enough support to work off of) then i support whoever wishes to interpret it that way

as far as story developments...... i support canon unless it makes no sense whatsoever, but even that depends on the show in question.

I'm a little ambivalent about "shipping" myself. There's a tendency in the media we are presented with to make it seem like "romance" is the most important thing in life, to the point of ignoring more serious issues.

For example, I was sort of participating in an on-line discussion of the Hunger Games (the book.) I think this was before Mockingjay came out. Anyway, a few of the participants were mostly interested in discussing whether Katniss was in more in love with Peeta or with Gale. I tried to point out that given that she and her family were constantly threatened with death, there was no room for romantic "love" like they were thinking of. And once she became a tribute, "love" in the sense those discussion participants were thinking of was mostly something to be faked to manipulate people. But they couldn't imagine that who Katniss was really "in love" with and would end up with wasn't the most important thing in the series. Their fixation on "shipping" made them miss the whole point of the series.

Personally, my rule with Canon is its the "real" version but if the writers whiff a far more interesting story in favor of telling the safe tale, fanon can and should fill in the gaps.

The Warhammer 40k rule: "Everything is cannon. Not everything that is cannon is true."

Why do I reference 40k? Take a look at any message board where different people have different OTP's. "Xenophobic, militaristic, theocratic dictatorships" is the kindest phrase I would use to describe the camps that form.

I read and enjoy fanfiction sometimes, but more because it's fun to explore the possibilities or things I thought would be interesting than because I reject canon. If I don't like the way a story ended or a certain ship, it doesn't mean it didn't happen, it just means I don't like it.

My thoughts on Canon? Supercorp is Canon, Lexa was never spoilers, same with Tara, Buffy/Faith is canon, and what happens on the show is just one persons opinion has nothing dot do with canon.

Literally what the the little witch academia fandom does. I mean I would have done with my favorite ship bit mine is canon (Lumity).
Absentia 5th Sep 2021, 2:49 AM edit delete reply
in general i go with canon, unless canon doesn't make sense or the creator themselves is problematic.

that being said, i ship like there's not tomorrow.
mrmokeman 5th Sep 2021, 3:53 PM edit delete reply
I ship what I ship. “Canon” is just an arbitrary box. What is the original content of not a stepping stone to lead me to fix-it-fics?
Kyla 5th Sep 2021, 5:27 PM edit delete reply
I'm the oddball who just doesn't care about shipping people in anime,tv show or movies etc. Don't get me wrong I love when couples work but I'm not going out of my way to ship people. Also I vote for best heart crushing couple is Loki and Sylvia. 😭😭
