Hey, folks. I meant to keep in touch during this hiatus, and then I mostly didn't. Sorry. Life happened. If you follow me via Twitter or on the Rain Discord server, you may have heard some vague updates or seen some teasy images here and there, but I've mostly been very quiet for the last month. And when I haven't been busy running around taking care of non-work things, I've mostly been kind of a lump (depression suuuucks like that). But as we near my projected return date (which I totally didn't forget was coming up, wink wink), I thought it was finally time to drop in and say something.

First of all, the good news: I am doing okay. I'm finally starting to be a bit productive again. It took a lot longer to get to this point than I hoped, but better late than never, right? :)

The catch is, that means I don't know if I'm quite ready to come back on July 26th as I'd previously assumed. At the time I began this hiatus, I'd hoped a month was a reasonable enough stretch to sort through things and maybe get about a dozen page buffer ready. But as I said, things progressed a little more slowly than I expected, and now I only have four pages ready. And I just don't feel confident coming back with that. I really wanted that extended leeway so I could work on Rain at a comfortable pace without stressing myself out.

The other thing is a little more personal, but I'm gonna be upfront about this. In the last month, I also made my first visit to the dentist in far longer than I care to admit. If you've ever seen pictures of me, you might've noticed I always smile with my mouth closed. And let's just say there's a reason for that. I've been meaning to fix my teeth for pretty much my whole adult life, but whereas I've been fortunate enough to have medical insurance to help me through transition, cancer, and most of the other curve balls life decided to throw at me, I've never had dental insurance (which I still don't understand why it's separate from medical, considering it too is a health issue, but that's not really the point).

I still don't have dental insurance. I inherited a little bit recently that I hoped could set me down the path to fix this (hence why this is suddenly happening now of all times), but I know I'm still not going to have enough in the long run. This is, if you couldn't tell, a new source of stress for me, but I don't want to back down, because I really have to do something about this. I may start a GoFundMe or something, but I really do hate asking for money. I'm kind of at a loss on what to do.

Either way, I am getting some of the work that I can afford on a post day following shortly after July 26th, when I'll be very unlikely to be able to post as a result. I'd rather not come back from hiatus, only to have to immediately take more time off, you know?

So, acknowledging both my interest in having more time to continue to build my page buffer, and also being mindful of how available I am to post in the coming weeks, I'm projecting a new return date for the comic: my new goal is to have Rain resume posting on August 18th. Just a little bit of extra time for me to both work through my pages, and also figure out what the heck to do with my personal life.

In short, as the image implies, I'm okay. I'm stressed and I'm struggling and I'm frustrated (and I'm afraid of going to the dentist), but I really am okay. My depression's eased up a little, at least. Things are tough, but somehow and some way, I'm gonna get through this. And while the comic is being pushed back a little, it will be back before you know it.

Thank you for your time and your patience. I appreciate you putting up with me a bit longer. I love you all and hope you're all well. Please brush your teeth, and take care. See you around soon.

You could also think about setting up a Patreon! The things could be as small as seeing your brainstorming ideas/doodles, or seeing pages a day early! It doesn't have to be anything super hard~ I feel the overwhelmedness! But just little stuff~ I know a lot of people would be super interested and you'd be able to take donations n stuff~

Take as much time as you need. Rain is an awesome comic, and I'll keep reading no matter how long you need.

Please take the time you need to be ready to continue on your terms. You don't owe us anything. You do owe yourself the time you need to feel well.
Don't worry, we will wait!

Defenitly a bit disapointed to hear of the delay, but I understand that's much more important to have everything in order first. Life is a hard thing, and it takes careful time and effort to create a good balance. So take your time.

I quit showing my teeth when smiling when my parents got me braces. I never had a reason to dislike my teeth, but "they need fixing" and the jerk filling down my fangs . . . I understand the sentiment. Take your time. We know you want to finish this story, we'll still be here.

And maybe instead of a gofundme, could we organize a massive shopping spree? I've been wanting to get print copies of Rain, do you get enough from sales that this would help? Wait, the links to lulu are not visible anymore, should I not buy them?
Jocelyn 24th Jul 2021, 10:08 PM edit delete reply

Lulu's still around, and certainly helpful too if you want to offer support that way. GoFundMe might be more efficient for me, but I'm still weighing my options. In the meantime, the books are here:

Take all the time you need!

(Also, the reason dental and vision insurance are separate is because they realized they can squeeze more money out of it this way.)

Take the time you need, your health comes above anything else.

And just a random advise, whatever it is that you are doing on your dental appointment, don't do like me: If its something that the dentist tell you to rest, REST! It's tempting to try to do something here and there because "it's only in your mouth", but it will make your recovery slower and more painful. I unfortunately know that from experience.

Here where I live, we enjoy public health, so no need to get insurances. But dental issues are not covered, except for extractions in case of cavities. For some reason, it's as if dental problems were not health problems as well. So stupid!

I can only imagine how terrible it must have been having had to wait so long for this. You deserve it already!
Julia_ 25th Jul 2021, 2:00 PM edit delete reply
Where I am we don't have any dental whatsoever unless we have to get admitted to a hospital :/ but if it gets that far you're probably in danger already.

Hopefully in the future we'll be able to change the silly rules

I recommend getting a really good electric toothbrush. The one I use is Sonicare brand. The best deal is to get it at Costco... they sell a bundle package with two toothbrushes, with two "travel charger" cases, and a set of replacement brushes.

When I first got mine, I used it for a month and then it was time for my next routine dentist visit. The dental hygienist took one look at my mouth and said "I can already tell you are doing something different, and whatever it is, I like it." And I thought: after only one month!

I had some trouble with my gums, and the vigorous ultrasonic brushing helped with that too. So honestly I give the Sonicare my full endorsement.

There might be something else that's as good, but I only have personal experience with the one I recommend. I gain no benefit from shilling for it, I am just a satisfied customer.

Good luck with your teeth and everything else.

The reason that I've heard for medical insurance not covering dental and vision that sounds the most plausible to me is "medical insurance was originally only about immediately serious problems. People realized that they critically needed help with dental and vision issues before medical insurance companies realized that routine preventive health care was cheaper in the long run."

Note that this is not a statement intending to endorse the insurance industry as it exists in the US. We had a problem with people having reasonable access to health care, and we came up with insurance companies without realizing the amount of power it gave the insurance companies to make the problem even worse. I think it never occurred to most people that insurance companies would negotiate with health care providers to have the latter raise their uninsured health care prices to allow the insurance companies to provide a bigger net "savings" on paper than they otherwise feasibly could.

I don't know what the best way to provide everyone access to the health care they need, but I feel it's very likely that this isn't that.
