So this page ended up being kinda weird, and I don't know if it's unclear or bringing up unnecessary information. See, when I was writing this page, I was thinking, "Well, it's 2013 in the story, so I should keep that in mind when determining how they end up watching the show." And I seem to remember (around that time) hooking up my laptop to my TV in order to watch things. But it didn't occur to me until I was drawing this page that I have no idea if that was a common practice or not. It might've just been a case of me being so technologically inept that I made things much harder for myself (as I do, because I am).

In hindsight, I feel quite certain that the Crunchyroll app (or Munchymaki, in Rainverse), existed in 2013. And it makes me wonder if I needed to explore this detail at all. Sure, I can explain this all away by saying Gavin's dad might not have a Smart TV or a current gaming console to easily open the app on. This would make opening the app on a computer and transferring the screen to the TV a technically viable optional solution. But it really is a convoluted explanation for a detail that truly won't affect the story, and might sound like a weird approach to doing it in time with easily accessible TV apps (also, they were accessible then too).

So, I finished drawing out the page as I'd originally written it, overly complicated irrelevant detail and all. It'd probably have been less work for me, and easier for everyone else to understand if I did just make Gavin up open an app on the TV. But I guess I'm committed to this. ^^;

And now as I read this whole blurb back, I'm like, "Yup. This is why I needed a break." XD

Sorry if I lost anyone in all that. But yeah, mid-chapter hiatus starts now. I'll be back in a month or so, with clearer and more coherent writing. I love you all, please take care.

Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.

To reiterate from the last couple pages, I usually don't like to burden y'all with my personal drama, but I've been pretty depressed lately. It's led to me slacking on my work and letting me fall behind on my page buffer. Then I get stressed out and overwhelmed by how much I have to do, and become paralyzed and completely unable to get anything done, which makes me depressed and spirals off into a vicious cycle.

I don't want to take a break, because I'm so close to the finish line with this story, and finishing any story would be a first for me. And that's really exciting for me! But my body and my brain are telling me I need to take a break, or it's gonna do more harm than good. Normally, I'd try to at least hold out until the chapter's over, but we're only like halfway into this one (and I probably shouldn't put my mental health on hold for months).

So here's the plan. As of now, I am on a one month hiatus from now until July 26th. I'll give myself a little time to breathe and recover and sort things out, and build the page buffer back up without constantly looming deadlines, and I'll ideally be ready to get back to posting by the end of next month. Worse comes to worst, I'll extend it if I absolutely have to, but this is the goal I'm going to aim for at this time.

I'm so sorry to put you through another hiatus again so soon, but thank you so much for your understanding! I'm hoping this will ultimately for the better for both myself and for Rain, which I think will be better for the reading experience as well.

It wouldn't be Rain without another Delay :P

Take care of yourself, hun

I love that she just has a VGA cable on her just in case.

Take all the time you need! We'll be here when you get back :)

Yeah I was going to say I love that detail because the Rainverse is in the past!

There's only one possible answer for where our beloved Chanel could have had that cable: Hammer Space. Chanel is so much of an otaku that she's channeled the power of anime characters to be able to pull random things (most commonly hammers) out of thin air!
Kinkajou 23rd Jun 2021, 9:50 AM edit delete reply
I love it. :D
ever-present 23rd Jun 2021, 7:12 PM edit delete reply
as long as water (from the pool or the rain) can't leak into hammerspace and wet the connecting pins (whatever they are called) on the cable :O

And yes Chanel, I had forgotten why you suggested this date for the party, and that it was your suggestion, and that the date of the party was relevant enough to the story to get more than a passing reference. I'm not the Rain super-fan I thought I was. (tbf I have memory problems)
Anon 24th Jun 2021, 7:48 PM edit delete reply
By definition, the user of a particular hammer space has complete control over that hammer space. Or, at least, I've never seen any anime characters use another character's hammer space in all the anime I've seen.

maybe if another character were a skilled enough pickpocket...

Honestly hooking a laptop onto a TV is what I always did for certain games or shows so it's a fair solution
malkavcandy 23rd Jun 2021, 10:15 AM edit delete reply
i -still- hook my pc up to the tv to watch stuff you can only find online, so it's totally valid.

I hope the hiatus is restful! Take as long as you need. (Also I started watching anime around the time I started reading Rain in 2014. Crunchyroll was definitely a thing then!)

Take care, Lynn!

I still connect a laptop to a TV sometimes, particularly when I want to watch my friends' Twitch streams. A PS4 is no good for chatting.

I don't think it's too crazy of an idea to hook up a laptop to a TV. Honestly, that's exactly what I would do, even nowadays - I've never been very savvy in the realm of smart TVs. I don't think it would have shattered immersion either way, but I do find those kind of pointlessly specific details to be fun to think about from a world-building perspective.
I think that explanation kind of adds to the humor too - like sure, they could have just pulled up an app on the TV, but Chanel really went to all the effort of pulling an entire VGA cable out of hammerspace just to watch anime. That's some dedication right there. (Also want to add how much I love the name Munchymaki, those kind of knock-off names really mesh with my dumb sense of humor.)
Anyway, hope you enjoy your break! It's certainly well-deserved, so take it easy and come back feeling nice and refreshed.

Take care Jocelyn!!! Your body and mind are much more important than this comic, it's been a long ride and we can absolutely wait a little longer. Don't worry about the comic. You will get there. Worry about yourself! :)

I still connect a laptop to a TV when I visit my family. I'm pretty sure I did that in 2013 too.

At home, I live a lone and I just watch on my desktop (I don't own a TV).

I carry multiple cable, too! I have HDMI, VGA, mini-HDMI, in 3 flavors! It's very nice to have a lot of cables, as you never know where you'll find an outlet, and being able to hook your computer up and watch anime on a massive screen is amazing! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

HDMI-DVI adapters are also very useful... Or, I'll just snap the projector to the back of my phone, possibly use VLC via wifi... (Though that doesn't work so well for full motion video)

Hey Jocelyn! Thank you so much for this wonderful and heartwarming chapter so far! I've really enjoyed the sweet interactions between the various characters, especially Ryan meeting Rain for the very first time!

I'm sorry that you've been depressed lately. I know you're doing the right thing in taking a hiatus from the comic. As everyone else said, give yourself a break and some time to recharge, and just come back when you're ready! Take care of yourself, and we'll look forward to Rain's return when you're ready! We hope you feel better soon!

No need to apologise! Your health comes first. Enjoy your break :-)

Also, neat detail with the VGA cable there! Apparently according to wikipedia HDMI 1.0 was invented in 2002, but I feel like VGA would have been common in 2013 too :D
lanodan 24th Jun 2021, 11:54 AM edit delete reply
Well the first time I saw VGA on laptops was around 2010, before that it was pretty much all VGA, sometimes with DVI or the typical Apple port weirdness.
And VGA only started going away in our recent years.
So if Gavin would have a bit of an old laptop like most teenagers quite tend to have, it might not have HDMI.

And given it was 2013, I remember streaming being quite slow so the 480p resolution that VGA was exactly made to handle would probably be what one would use to avoid buffering.
Emily (no relation) 24th Jun 2021, 2:54 PM edit delete reply
2013 was part of the transition era from VGA to HDMI on laptops. I want to say that my 2006 Era Laptop had HDMI on it but it was also $2000 brand new. This is also the era that Brand New Consoles (Xbox360 and PS3) started using HDMI cables and phased out RF video compatibility. VGA was no longer on consumer laptops starting in 2015.

Laptop to TV is still a thing in my world, too.
In 2013 a smartphone you could watch video on would have been out of my price range - i still had a flip phone then.

honestly, i'm surprised they didn't watch it the moment everyone was there. between Chanel, Rain, Emily, and Maria to a lesser extent, i figured it would have taken a higher priority in the party.

I wouldn’t say this came out weird, I feel like it’s a fitting transition chapter. Not every transition is going to feel super smooth

Jocelyn's comments sent my mind off on a laundry list of things I have researched over the years. So, yeah, definitely take care of yourself ! As much as I enjoy the comic, I've also lost too many friends who DIDN'T pay attention to signs of depression and pushed themselves for really no good reason, until they REALLY broke. DON'T do that !! Part of how I ended up where I'm at, but I've accepted that I DO have the mental resilience to live with my choices, and should accept that gift for what it's worth, as well. Because the things that I wanted most in my life, I mostly got, even if I didn't get them in the ways I thought I wanted ( or would have been far more 'ideal' ). And that friends who have to make choices to keep their life in balance, that takes them out of connection to me, may make me sad at the time, but I am much happier in the long run knowing they are happy and healthy, even if I seldom get to see them anymore. Live, Laugh and Love !!

Hey, I'm another person who's been reading Rain for years but never commented. This comic means a lot to me though. Do what you need for your mental health, and I look forward to the comic returning on Jul 26. :)

Anyway, I saw a link for a discord server in the comments a few pages back, but it was expired, so uh, could I have an updated link for that please?

As long as it is the right cable. (Though I suspect that there are many different cables is hammerspace.)
I used an hdmi cable to make a super big monintor out of my tv when I had eye problems. At my parents' place we use an hdmi cable to the tv (Just too old to have built in net connectivity) so we can do things like zoom meetings.

I adore that the cable she has is kinda dated. It's a cute touch :3

i mean, the story is currently only in around 2013, so what's dated to us is still probably common use for them.

It's ok, Lynn. The constant coming up with content to fill a comic isnt easy. I have days where I can't think of a thing. And my main comic is meant to mirror my life...haha. That's why hiatus is a thing, so we can step back, refocus our minds and come back stronger than before. Take your time, Little Lynn.💙 Those loyal to you won't go anywhere. We love you.

Sooo I just realised that if the Rainverse is currently in 2013... that means it was 2012 when we started (not counting the prologue)... and Jocelyn started posting comic regularly in 2010....

Did you know you were doing a sci-fi futuristic drama?? XD
