I like this page. It's amusing, we get to see the rare instance of a chill Debbie, and we even learn a little something about the yearbook. Plus, it's just kinda nice seeing a group of all cis folk coming to realize and respect the name someone asks to be called, without said person having to be there to remind them. It's a surprisingly packed little page. I'd love to hear your thoughts too! ^_^
This whole week has been a treat for me, honestly. I hope you've all enjoyed this little detour even if it does focus on more minor characters. As I've said in a previous blurb, I am very aware of which characters y'all are much more excited to see. Next time, maybe we'll see one or two of them. ^_^
Debbie is protecting Rain. Awww.... this is really sweet. Debbie's really gotten through a lot, and she's a much better person than she might have been as; she's pretty sweet.
I wonder if Debbie actually realized that Rain is actually trans (ignoring the previous accusation of being the father of Emily's baby) but has matured enough to not tell anybody else and just accept Rain regardless.
I think that Debbie got all caught up with solving the "mystery", needing to be right, being resentful toward Emily and Rain and wanting to bring them down... but she's not a bad person she just got caught up in it all, and when she realised she actually had figured something out with the potential to be seriously harmful she came to her senses and backed off. It's great to see her protecting Rain to make sure that her secret doesn't get any further out.
Actually had that mistake happen in my senior yearbook, which is insanely annoying because my name is just plain simple "Alex", yet for some reason they put the extended gender-specific version in the yearbook for some reason even though no paper work ever said that.
i'm crying thinking of so many people reading that yearbook .. the most bitter taste of that one cruel moment of their prom immortalised in that tome of eternal judgement. and what if rain's grades are like that too? her friends here are wonderful people, but is there anything they can do?
It is really nice seeing a group of cis people respect the name someone wants to be called without needing all the answers to their questions. And it has been nice to see Debbie in a nicer light. I really enjoyed this light-hearted page!
There was a boy in my grade that's name in the ledgers was K0ry and evry document wrote it that way and no one noticed until I pointed it out senior good off week and suggested he see if he couldn't get it fixed before his diploma potentially looked faked. XD
Someone I grew up with had gone by the same nickname since birth, and it was somehow on all the school pictures, documents, etc. Her nickname and given name were both fairly common, feminine names, but weren't usually associated with each other (it might've been her grandma's name or something?) And when she told me and some classmates in 8th grade that the name we all knew wasn't her actual given name, we didn't believe her ;P
I've noticed that Debbie never really seemed inherently transphobic, it was more that she just hated Rain so she let her ingnorances drive her to say and assume some wrong and mean things.
Quite possibly. I also suspect that somewhere along the line it's occurred to Debbie that if the wants to restore her friendship with Emily, it would help to make peace with Emily's GF. :-)
This is just my personal take, but I don't think Debbie's been transphobic. I don't even think she's been antagonistic.
She's certainly nursed a grudge, but that's neither here or there.
Debbie found Rain in the school bathroom by accident and clocked her pursuing a crazy hunch. It was markedly unpleasant for Rain how Debbie then went LE GASP, A BOY IS DRESSED AS A GIRL, BUT HOW CAN THIS BEEEE. But. When people are knocked for a loop like that, they don't just think things through on the spot and come to an understanding of what's going on and what's the right thing to do and why. Maybe they should, but they don't. I'm comfortable kicking myself for that, not other people or cartoon characters, so I don't think it was transphobic.
Debbie's sole kickable moment arrives right after, when she asks if Rain's not afraid Debbie'll spill the beans.
The rest of it has just been Debbie resenting Rain. But she's also displayed an admirable maturity in understanding that she owes no allegiance to her own emotions. She listens to them, she doesn't owe it to them to do what they say. Neither would that make it right. Debbie's even said as much to Emily, basically remarking "I hate Rain, and she's alright."
Of course, I may be too soft on Debbie by deeming all of the above not transphobic. That maturity instantly gets like a hundred bonus points from me.
What kind of person is Emily's mom? at times, she seems
A) Abusive
B) Overprotective
C) Pushy
also, we never saw her stance on lgbtq+ rights. What were her intentions, really?
Yeah, that's my fault. I thought that since Emily's mom told Emily to abort "for her own good," I assumed that meant she actually cared a little but nope, that's just her being a bossy jerk.
We don't know for sure what she thinks of queer rights, but we know Emily's impression was that she would be kicked out if her mom found out she had a girlfriend.
It's not even the first time she expresses the fear of her mother finding out. It's a little more subtle, but Emily's fear of coming out is also expressed way back here. Also in two separate bonus chapters on top of that too.
Also, it feels kinda wrong to be bringing up Emily's mom now when nice things are happening on the current page. ^^;

Makes me glad my high school yearbooks didn't do individual headshots.

At what point does Emily's mom seem "overprotective"? Her mom's character is just meant to be an abusive, child-neglecting narcissist. O_o
