And here we hit the main setting of this chapter, at last. And (I think) the first time we've seen Porter's Books since waaaaaay back in Chapter 3 (though it felt way less time capsule-y back then). XD
That's the best way to hide in a bookstore. If anyone you don't want to deal with comes in and finds you, you can tell them you're on the clock and can't talk to them, unless and only if it pertains to purchases they are making.
In some cases, you don't even need to be on the clock to do this. And at least some stores, there are employee-only areas you can hide in. (It's possible they all do, but I've been in bookstores where the door(s) to the employee only areas were not clearly visible. I like to think their actual employee only areas were behind bookshelves with hidden switches to open them.)
I'm so glad that Rain can be there to be a literal shoulder for Emily to cry on. That's the kind of support everyone should have. I'm so happy for their relationship together <3
Maybe it's just me, but I can't help thinking that this bookstore looks kinda empty... like it's at the end of a going out of business sale and is down to its last table. ;-)
Borders Books, actually. I don't think they exist anymore, but they did when I first wrote it into Chapter 3. So for continuity purposes, they never went out of business in the Rainverse.
