To be abundantly clear, Jess deciding to move out neither means she's packed and ready to leave tonight, nor does it mean she's actually exiting the story. It just means in the very literal sense, she will seek someplace else to live and no longer live under Fara's (rented) roof. But I don't want her fans to worry, as she promises in the last panel, she probably won't be going far.

For the record, I didn't cover this in the recap because it's a rather small side point of the chapter overall. But if you need a quick refresher, Jess originally started staying here after her breakup with Aiken, in exchange for helping Rain meet Vincent to start transition. Rain has since begun her transition. And Jessica has very recently made peace with Aiken. She's fulfilled what she set out to do and gotten the closure she wanted. It's just time to move onto the next chapter of her life. All in all, with everything else going on, this is actually really good news, and making their apartment less crowded could ultimately prove very beneficial. ^_^

Wow, I wasn't expecting that.

Anyhow, you can now vote in Part Four of the Rain Favorite Character Tournament! As usual, you can vote for as many characters as you want, and the top four will advance to the next round.

Okay, weird: this post showed up now, even though after I made it Jocelyn said that it got eaten by CF (hence why I made it again below).
Jocelyn 29th Sep 2020, 12:36 PM edit delete reply
Real talk? I have no idea what's going on. It was just in my list of pending posts this morning, where it wasn't previously. So now I have no idea if I missed it somehow (usually CF tells me if there's something I haven't approved yet, though) or if there was actually some kind of weird delay (though, a week long delay seems unreasonable).

I feel like this might be my bad, if accidentally so. Whether it is or not, I'm sorry this happened. I'll try to make sure it doesn't happen again, though. :)

Now thinking, Rain is the only reason Fara's house has anyone living in it with her. If Rain wasn't in the picture, she'd never have been there to help take in Jess during her time of need, Emily wouldn't have any connection to Fara either, and Rain of course wouldn't live with Fara. Aunt Fara took on a lot when she took her niece in.

aunt fara is honeslty the biggest hero of the entire comic. she's an absolute legend

Where is Jessica going to go? Is she moving back to her old apartment or is that Aiken’s apartment?
Some Ed 24th Sep 2020, 3:51 PM edit delete reply
I feel like it's unlikely for Aiken's apartment to be in this same town. It's my impression that Aunt Fara moved far enough away from Rain's other relatives so as to make it unlikely for them to just happen into them.

As such, this would be an announcement that she's now officially looking for a new apartment in town.

Jaiken or Jeather is a very hard choice...
Jinx 23rd Sep 2020, 3:24 PM edit delete reply
Personally, I'm a fan of the really long odds option: Jaikther. ;)

Pretty sure Lynn said Jessica was straight.

I mean, Jessica herself said so. But shippers gonna ship. It's fine.

So it's okay if I ship Jaikther as part of the front row for the Rainily wedding? ;)

I love this comic! And I wish I could buy it as a paper copy, but I'm not out to my parents yet, and being a closeted ftm, getting a book with a trans main character would probably be problematic. But, I'll continue to read Rain on ComicFury and can't wait to see what happens next!

I'm sorry bro. Hope you are enjoying!
Ada Keren 24th Sep 2020, 1:06 AM edit delete reply
Or it could be a good way to test the waters on how your parents feel about trans stuff? I mean, you don't have to be trans to enjoy this great comic that happens to be about someone trans. Of course you know your situation better than me, but just a thought :)

Omg Rain's cute sad face in the last panel I wanna squish hug her <3

Also, I love the mamma feels Jessica is giving off :3

I must reread the comic, as I've completely forgotten who Gerald Broom is.
Shoto 24th Sep 2020, 1:42 PM edit delete reply
It's ok, so have I.
Does anyone know who Gerald Broom is?
Jocelyn 24th Sep 2020, 4:19 PM edit delete reply
@anyone who forgot who Gerald Broom is

He's one of Chanel's teachers. We don't see him too often, but when we do, it's usually alongside Fara and Mrs. Parker.

Incidentally, people forgetting him might be my fault. I seem to recall coming to the realization a few years back that no matter how often he appears, I seem to always forget to address him by name. It might say in the blurbs (and definitely says on the character page), but if you strictly look at the comic, I could see it being completely missed. Unless I'm forgetting something, prom might be the first time he's addressed by name in canon.

My bad. ^^;

quick question about the dialogue: it’s been established that rain’s speaking is written in italics because she’s purposely modulating her voice to be higher, right? but jessica’s speaking is written normally, so is she not doing that?
Jocelyn 23rd Sep 2020, 6:18 PM edit delete reply
That is correct. My angle - as I've heard from many, many testimonies - is that some trans women are able to train their voice well enough to permanently change it. To the point where if they wanted to use their "original" voice, that actually becomes difficult to do. So whereas Rain's dialogue is italicized to note her active and constant effort to keep her voice in her desired range, Jessica (and also Ana) are not, because they have trained their voices well enough that it just comes naturally, without thinking.

That's my reasoning, anyway. As someone who has not been able to permanently change my voice, I wanted to be able to showcase both trans women who share my struggle and those who don't. We're all valid. ^_^

I've been told I have a neutral sounding voice. Especially over the phone I get people saying " oh I thought you were your mom" it's a nice validation. I haven't really tried altering my voice and am not sure if I will need to, But We are all valid as Lynn said so I support all my trans brothers and sisters
Neelix 24th Sep 2020, 11:02 AM edit delete reply

Would Ana have even needed to do that? Keeping in mind I've never read any of the bonus chapters from the books, and based on what she told Rain when she came out to her, my headcannon for Ana up to now has been that most of her physical development during puberty would probably have been normal for a girl... all while she was probably still effectively being forced to present as a boy at school...
bgb16999 24th Sep 2020, 1:35 PM edit delete reply
One fun wrinkle to Jessica's voice I noticed is that in chapter 38, she does speak in italics when she wants to imitate Aiken's voice. My interpretation was that she needed to make a conscious effort to do a masculine voice like Aiken's.
Jocelyn 24th Sep 2020, 4:36 PM edit delete reply

Indeed! That's the idea. Italics are used a couple times for other characters imitating someone else's voice. In a very relevant instance, there's one page where Emily's text is italicized (and bolded) when quoting her mom. I always kinda envisioned that as her doing a mockingly shrill, "squawking" voice.

Ruby also uses italicized text when talking to Aiken or Allison or anyone not in the know.

To oversimplify, italics is just "actively changing your voice". :)

Not sure if it's just me, but has Rain been looking more mature these last few pages?
William Melton 24th Sep 2020, 5:48 AM edit delete reply
Heavy stuff is going on and she's grown up a lot over the span of this comic.
