"Gee, Lynn. All these scenes are just Emily talking about her mom."
And that's no coincidence. For a little context, let's talk about the individual panels. The whole chapter won't be just this, but it will be the primary focus.
~
The first panel here is from the end of Chapter 33, where Emily is talking to Rain about some of what her mom (and Chase too, but he's not important in the upcoming chapter) did to her and the impact it's had on her.
The second panel is from Chapter 37, at prom when her mom calls her, and tells her to come home. We only hear Emily's side of the conversation, but she's much more flustered than we tend to see her. http://rain.thecomicseries.com/comics/1148/
When she talks to Rain, though, she brings up feeling conflicted about it and formally requests Rain's permission to stay with her longer. http://rain.thecomicseries.com/comics/1153/

The last five panels here are all from Chapter 39. It takes place just a few days after prom (after Emily didn't go home to her mother). Emily hasn't heard a peep from her mom since (neither out of concern, nor anger). Just nothing. Emily gets frustrated with this and decides she wants to tell her mom off. Rain seems concerned about this move, but is willing to support her if it's what she wants. http://rain.thecomicseries.com/comics/1239/ http://rain.thecomicseries.com/comics/1240/ http://rain.thecomicseries.com/comics/1241/
The final line shown in the recap is from a page a bit later in Chapter 39. It's one of the main reasons I wanted to make a recap to begin with. I think "can we do this tonight" was mostly glossed because of the rest of the content on that page revolving largely around Debbie and Holly. And if you missed that one particular line, the start of Chapter 40 might be extra confusing. http://rain.thecomicseries.com/comics/1255/

This is all the most important stuff to know going in. The TL;DR is Emily's mom sucks and Emily wants to make sure she knows that. But if you needed the details, here they are.
Chapter 40 begins on Wednesday. Strap in; it's gonna be a bumpy ride.
100% agree with this! With family members who are as awful as Emily's mom is, the only "win" is where you move on with your life and don't have to deal with them again.
I guess Emily thinks she needs to confront her mom first but I still think it's really, really not a good idea. People like Emily's mom will never give you the closure you're looking for. Closure is a gift you give to yourself.
I can understand Emily's desire for closure with her mother. Going through a difficult situation, especially with a family member, can deteriorate a person beyond any contact with that person. Sometimes, you have to meet your demons head on in order to defeat them. I support Emily in confronting her mother. Sometimes, in order to escape, you have to go to Silent Hill.
I would not have guessed that "take care of things tonight" was referring to confronting Emily's mom. This is, what, the Monday after prom?
So excited to read the new chapter!
