And of course, "that girl with an androgynous name" was none other than Rain, as seen here. It's perhaps worth reminding readers who may have forgotten, that Colette (who shall from here on be referred to as Ryan) doesn't actually know Rain. She's just that girl who stood in front of him at check in, and she later got crowned Prom King through some weird mistake as far as he knows.

And "Ryan" is just this nice, low-key name that sounds nothing like his given name. And it's gender neutral enough to be helpful for someone trying to take coming out slowly. It's perfect for him! ^_^

Oh, but I guess Rudy seems a bit surprised. ^^;

Anyway, I have a funny feeling people are going to have a lot of opinions about this development. No matter how people feel about the name itself, I'm hoping you'll all still respect his choice. Ryan is the name he wants, so let's make an effort to call him that. Just like if you have a trans friend in real life, who you've known for years before they came out to you: It doesn't matter what you've been calling them all along. What matters is the name they ask to be called when they finally tell you.

And lastly, I hope you all like this page. :)

I mean, nothing wrong with it ya know. Maybe his inspiration for it is a bit complicated, but whatever works.

Oh no, hear comes the drop and echo!

Love Rudy's face in the last panel.

I feel like people are gonna get so confused when news about “that trans kid Ryan” gets around lol
Willow13 18th Apr 2020, 3:12 PM edit delete reply
I hope Rain doesn't freak out about that.
Anna 17th Apr 2020, 9:34 AM edit delete reply
Ryan is free to use whatever name he likes, but if he joins the group I feel for Rain who is going to be basically hearing her deadname all the time.
Cornelius 20th Apr 2020, 6:46 AM edit delete reply
Could also end up liberating her by helping her associate the name Ryan with Ryan rather than with her deadname
Catlife333 17th Apr 2020, 9:40 AM edit delete reply
These too are real cute. Also I laughed so much at the last couple panels
glmdgrielson 17th Apr 2020, 10:05 AM edit delete reply

Does this violate the rule of one character per name?
Chrissy 17th Apr 2020, 5:29 PM edit delete reply
I think that's only an issue if we pull in the delays... especially the strips "Ryan, the totally normal guy"
Sc4rlite 18th Apr 2020, 6:15 AM edit delete reply
I'm sure there'd be a crossover between "Ryan, the totally normal guy" and "Colette, the totally normal gal"

That would be fun to read

Sometimes people pick names that end up being peeps deadnames.

Trans people have different responses to this but the two more common sides of the response are either: A; Ughs, that name. and B; Thank the gods someone likes that name.
Neelix 17th Apr 2020, 10:16 AM edit delete reply
*snickers* Love the look on Rudy's face there...
That being said give the pretty big hint on that first panel on the second page I was fully expecting him to pick up on that and guess the name before the newly dubbed Ryan actually said it.
Adama 17th Apr 2020, 10:26 AM edit delete reply
Should Rain have a pretend ceremony where she gifts her deadname to the new Ryan? After they get to know each other, obviously.
Unknown 17th Apr 2020, 1:06 PM edit delete reply
A pretend ceremony where Rain bequeaths her deadname actually sounds like a good idea. Like losing ownership of something you didn't want in the first place, if that makes sense? It sounds almost freeing.

That said, I'm not trans, so I completely acknowledge that I'm looking from a point of view with zero experience in how someone in Rain's shoes would feel about this. I also don't think this would be something that works for everyone - we're all individuals, after all.

I believe knowledge and understanding is part of the path to acceptance and support, so feel to correct me if I'm way off base. :)
Tylie 18th Apr 2020, 12:06 AM edit delete reply
I love this idea
Willow13 19th Apr 2020, 8:27 AM edit delete reply
It would be cool but I am not sure if that would work as it may be painful for Rain
Syter6 17th Apr 2020, 10:41 AM edit delete reply
poor rain, if ryan is gonna join the group, she is gonna hear her deadname a lot.
i am not trans so i don't know if it is better if she knows they don't talk about her, but still

I actually kind of expect her to laugh at the news...
Ari 17th Apr 2020, 12:03 PM edit delete reply
In my experience, it's slightly better yes, but it's still weird as heck and kinda hurts. :P
phia 17th Apr 2020, 11:06 AM edit delete reply
I have a deadname that is a very common name. I usually end up meeting someone who has it now matter where I go. I think there's been like 5 or 6 people at work who have it. While it sucked at first to constantly hear my dead name, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It quickly got me used to not responding to it anymore and I feel much less attachment to the name than I otherwise would have.
Rusty 6th May 2020, 6:03 AM edit delete reply
Feels, my name is so damn common that a local LARP group consisted of a half dozen with that name that formed a group of ****ui (ui replacing a previous ending to indicate multiples of them).

Was kinda weird solidarity to it, because none of them (including me then, but not gonna say us here) used the name normally. Which was bcuz everyone used LARP names (I just turned my LARP name into my name) for each other even when seeing each other outside of LARP, cuz common names suck (I feel).

The weirdest part is that at least two of the ****ui have since come out as being not a ****ui at all. Me and my friend and fellow nonbinary person, E Finley (lastname redacted).
bgb16999 17th Apr 2020, 11:07 AM edit delete reply
I called it! Okay, I actually said as a joke that he would pick either Ryan or Aaron, which would make either Rain or Ana uncomfortable and Ryan would have no idea why. But even though I did say it, I am surprised it happened.

Fortunately, Rain is stronger now. She will be able to handle it.
Unholychinchilla 17th Apr 2020, 11:07 AM edit delete reply
Well this is... complex. Nobody's fault though and Ryan's reasoning is solid (though how it feels for him matters more of course).

It might be difficult for Rain but it can be worked through and may even help in time to distance herself from her deadname. While not quite the same situation, before coming to terms with being trans, I had the same name as several of my friends, including one of my closest friends. There were a number of in-jokes around it.

When I came out and changed my name, I had to accept that I'd hear my Deadname a lot (though thankfully not directed at me). It has helped make it feel more like a name for other people and not me, though it took me a while to stop responding to it.

My change of name has certainly made weekly game nights easier as there's no longer anyone doubling up. In a fun twist of fate it's actually the close friend who shared my deadname who ended up signing my change of name document. Though I was a little disappointed that he didn't experience a Highlander-style Quickening as a result.

Ryan is an awesome name! I don't know how Rain would react, but I know when a friend of mine picked something based on my deadname, it was kind of a nice feeling having someone else come to mind when I heard it instead of me.
Evelyn 17th Apr 2020, 11:58 AM edit delete reply
I think for some people, hearing and associating their deadname with another person can be a good thing, cause you think of someone else when you hear that name.

I had a friend that had my deadname when I was younger. He was in the same class as I was from the first year of primary school all the way to ninth grade. I've though of my deadname as his name since second grade.

So my best friend is a trans girl. At one point, I dated a trans boy and his chosen name was her deadname. It was... awkward at times lol.
ElyIndigo 17th Apr 2020, 1:53 PM edit delete reply
Well at least now any time someone deadnames Rain, Ryan can be like "YES??"
Neelix 17th Apr 2020, 7:45 PM edit delete reply
Except that the only people Ryan would be out to (assuming he does decide to do so) are those within the group, and they would never deadname Rain to begin with.

Unless her sister happened to be visiting.
Neelix 20th Apr 2020, 10:39 AM edit delete reply
Her sister? *blinks* Do you mean Kellen?
Kellen interacting with the group as a whole seems unlikely at this point, especially at school.
Ryan choosing to out himself to Kellen if such an unlikely interaction should occur seems even more unlikely.
ElyIndigo 20th Apr 2020, 9:56 AM edit delete reply
I mean it's still her legal name and on all her school records and paperwork. The school faculty have deadnamed her before and they probably will again
Neelix 21st Apr 2020, 5:13 AM edit delete reply
Yes, but my point is that as far as anyone else is concerned Ryan's name is still Colette, and last we heard he had no intention of coming out to anyone else while still at high school.
CaptainBlackstar 17th Apr 2020, 4:12 PM edit delete reply
Rudy's gotta be like, "ooookay, and when you meet my friends, make it very very clear I had nothing whatsoever to do with that decision. That I didn't suggest it or anything like that. And if they start giving me death glares and I sink under the table, that's perfectly normal."
Fourth Nate 17th Apr 2020, 4:46 PM edit delete reply
If Rain knew this, which she doesn't need to, I think she'd be extremely depressed by it for a while because of the prom reminders, and then at some point suddenly flip on it and be elated that, despite prom being a bad time for her, she indirectly helped a trans brother's journey.
Unrelated, anyone coming to this webcomic later and trying to comment on earlier comics with this character... is gonna be in for a time of it XP

Ruan, because then it works both when Rudy is Rudy and when he's Ruby.
Long-Time Lurker 17th Apr 2020, 8:24 PM edit delete reply
While I'm sure it'll be weird and uncomfortable for a while, but I kinda like the idea of Rain's deadname being re-used as now "belonging" to Ryan (like a thrift store or used bookstore -- someone else gets enjoyment of something that no longer fits you). Same as swapping old clothes and such.

I think it's absolutely trans culture to have names be read differently in how androgynous they are. My given name is actually fairly androgynous but I so strongly associate it as AFAB, I wanted a different name when I came out. Ironically I picked a name I felt was really androgynous but others read as fairly binary. -laughs-

aha, I caught up! I found this comic a week ago in this reddit thread, and its fucking amazing. like, I binged the first 600 pages in 2 days amazing. also, Jocelyn, Youre so cute and You seem to care about Your readers so much, and thank You for this comic.
MavistheRainBeau 17th Apr 2020, 9:15 PM edit delete reply
What are the odds of that?
In this comic, like, 99%.
But I feel like Rain would be happy that she got to help a guy find a name? Maybe? Like composting? Throwing away something so that it might be useful later? Am I just rambling?

To be honest, I'm dealing with my I-wish-was-deadname suddenly being a name in FFVII Remake. It's arguably gender neutral, but it has a typically different pronunciation depending on gender/origin. To be honest, I even thought of keeping it since I spent my entire life going through "no, it's not (that name) it's (this, same exact name)" only to be like "wait, I want a completely new name" after figuring more out about myself. But I've been through this somewhat. My group of friends all know someone with that name longer and whenever they were like "I'm hanging out with deadname. Not, not them, cool deadname." XD
Neonshi 18th Apr 2020, 2:01 AM edit delete reply
OKAY but I actually have two trans friends who came out to me around the same time and the trans guy's chosen name was the same name as my other friend's deadname. So like, I feel you Rudy

End of the day, Ryan, if he sticks with that; deserves the same happiness and so on as Rain. And while a tad close to the bone, she more than anyone will know about being who you are.

TLDR: The only person who needs to be bothered about Ryan's name is Ryan.
Leah 18th Apr 2020, 2:13 PM edit delete reply
I love the idea of Rain formally gifting her old name to previously-Colette!

But I think Rudy might should let him know that girl-from-prom-with-the-androgynous-name is one of the friends he's been talking about. Otherwise that will get weird real fast!
Guest 18th Apr 2020, 2:30 PM edit delete reply

I stand corrected from my comment on the last comic, he has picked a name. Cue the awkwardness when Rain and Ryan meet officially and especially if this "origin story" is explained.
mj6373 18th Apr 2020, 3:23 PM edit delete reply
Everybody else is pointing out the obvious about Rain having to maybe hear her deadname a lot, but my immediate thought was about Rudy associating the new Ryan with seeing Rain in boy-mode way back when. Poor guy.
Chrissy 18th Apr 2020, 7:38 PM edit delete reply
After Rain and Ryan meet, and learn about each other's, um, situation, I wonder if they're going to try figuring out a way to trade, unwanted parts....
Neelix 18th Apr 2020, 7:55 PM edit delete reply
Am I the only one thinking that with the exception of Rain herself, the member of the group who's most likely to take longest to get used to there being a new Ryan is Gavin? He's the only one of the group who ever knew Rain before she started calling herself Rain.
Mir 18th Apr 2020, 8:10 PM edit delete reply
Well done Jocelyn, I burst out laughing at that reveal. I've got faith that Rain will be able to handle this fine, though I might be projecting a bit; hearing/having to call someone else's name that's my deadname is what helped me really get over dysphoria over it, so there's hope for a drama-less route here.
Bandana_girl 18th Apr 2020, 9:17 PM edit delete reply
I find the times when a deadname becomes someone else's chosen name to be amusingly awkward. Granted, this is even more awkward with three chosen name being chosen because of the deadname

jesslc 20th Apr 2020, 12:25 AM edit delete reply
I'm a little worried that Rudy might react badly or strangely to Ryan's choice of name, out of concern for Rain. I hope not because he can't exactly explain why he's reacting weird to Ryan. But it's certainly the sort of thing that Rudy would have done a few months ago (in comic time).

I don't think Rudy was nearby when Rain explained to Devon that she never liked the name Ryan so she goes by Rain instead, so Rudy probably wouldn't know that Rain's okay with saying that. In fact, does Ryan even know that Rain goes by Rain and not her deadname? I guess he (Ryan) was probably watching when the prom queen mix up happened and he would have seen the correction.
Blue Sawyer 20th Apr 2020, 8:35 AM edit delete reply
I don't really have an issue with the name or the inspiration, it just makes me wonder a bit if when he finally meets Rain and comes out, if hearing someone else use her deadname will have an impact on the dysphoria. Although I guess if it's just a trans guy who wants to be called Ryan it might be completely fine, but I feel like when Ryan tells Rain what his inspiration was, if that would maybe trigger something not-great with Rain. I could be over analyzing this, because she DID deadname herself to get into prom, but I'm wondering how this would all go if Ryan did decide to come out to the gang.
RubyRuthNeal 20th Apr 2020, 8:35 AM edit delete reply
Well, I guess the next Rain Delay installment of "The Adventures of RYAN, The Totally Normal Guy"is going to look perhaps just a little different and more updated than those from the past, eh?

BTW, My new last name is actually my birth first name repurposed. My birth middle name (shortened form) was Rudy, hence my new legal firstname of Ruby, proudly and blatantly stolen right here from this very webcomic, so for those who didn't know.... Jocelyn unknowingly provided me with my new name, which Ruby Neal is so very close to what my mother used to call me f from infancy until grade school when the public schools here required students starting 1st grade way back in the 1960s to use the name as registered on their Texas birth certificate, so the earliest name I knew ajd donsidered *was* my name, was originally Rudy Neal, and like Rain, at age 4 years old I didn't really know the difference between boys and girls and thought I was a girl, I had long hair, grown since birth, and I played dolls with my sister and her friends, had nothing to do with the neighbor boys my age at all. So, I've now come back around full circle to who I was originally.... it just took me 50 years to get back here, lol!
Zensunni 20th Apr 2020, 9:11 AM edit delete reply
Well, if Ryan joins the group, he'll most likely find out about Rain being in transition and learn that Ryan was her deadname. While it might cause Rain some discomfort initially, IF it's handled poorly, (I'm looking at YOU Rudy... you have the power to make things go smoothly here!) I don't think she'll have a serious problem with someone else having the name 'Ryan' being her friend. And, to be fair, it IS a fairly androgynous name, though more commonly given to boys. There are still plenty of examples of famous female Ryans. (Several actresses and singers as well as a soccer player in recent years.)
Tani 20th Apr 2020, 9:19 AM edit delete reply
This could be good for Rain. she now has a reason to not associate her deadname with her past.
Sofi 20th Apr 2020, 9:59 AM edit delete reply
I know it differs from person to person, but personally I'm always happy when I meet trans guys with my old name. It was a nice name, it just wasn't mine :)
AceEnbyAro 20th Apr 2020, 10:09 AM edit delete reply
This could easily complicate it if Rudy introduces him to his friends. I can see Rain being uncomfortable with Ryan's name, especially if he or Rudy decide to tell her what inspired it.
JD 20th Apr 2020, 12:46 PM edit delete reply
Considering Rain was willing to use her dead name as a weapon I think she’d be ready to bury the hangup, especially if it’s so another trans person could come out with it. Not saying that’s how it always works, but given the narrative timing, character development, and finish line in sight I think it’s a safe bet. I also don’t remember where Ryan is going to school next year so it might be a nonissue, college kids get busy.
