Maybe I can have a short non-blurb again today. I feel like I've gone over everything that needed to be covered in the last couple pages. So I'm hoping this one doesn't require much elaboration, as I'm not sure what to add right now.
And looking back a few pages, I see Jocelyn gave him the name Derek. What a coincidence, My former supervisor who committed sexual harassment to me, ultimately resulting in my losing my job earlier this year is a Derek. I also worked with another Derek a couple decades ago who was an ex-cop and who was suspected to have murdered two people who were about to provide testimony implicating him for being a dirty cop. I’m sure there are plenty of guy guys named Derek out there, but the name has become one I can’t help but hold a little prejudice and suspicion towards now.
A wild guess here.... somehow Chase is involved here.... maybe he’s somewhere behind the scenes lurking around the place, and bribed Douchebag Derek with a wad of cash to do this as some way to get back at Emily by hurting her friend Rain, who he already deduced if trans.
i don’t think mr announcer guy is a douchebag; i think it was just an honest (if careless) mistake that was mostly just a result of having no idea who these students are, and also the really weird way the ballot was structured with just initials and no indication of gender; like, even if there hadn’t been a trans kid with her deadname on the prom register, it was still a misgendering waiting to happen, given how unisex names aren’t uncommon
like, don’t get me wrong, it’s fucking awful that rain got deadnamed and misgendered in front of her classmates! i just don’t think there was any malice involved
Take it easy on him, it's an honest mistake probably originating from the school's roster having Rain listed as "Ryan."
He's apologized and offered a plausible explanation that doesn't indicate that her name is legally still Ryan... "You're not done" might be the results of the recounted ballots, naming Rain prom queen and someone else prom king.
Aren't they being a liiitle harsh? I mean, assuming this guy doesn't have anything else to confess, wasn't this an honest mistake?
It doesn't speak well of his competence, sure, but really, he's just some working stiff like the rest of us, probably underpaid. And Rain wasn't outed; no one's even saying mean things. So it's not like the consequences were particularly grave. They don't have to publicly embarass him.
The kids don't know who's responsible. Whether he personally counted or not, he is representing the venue, so he is right apologize for the error regardless.
I don't think it's wrong to feel bad for him, mind you, but he's an adult getting heckled a little by a couple of teens (not calling him names or swearing, just speaking out in support of their friend). I promise you, he's gonna be just fine.
I'm inclined to agree. It looked like a few pages back the forms weren't designed particularly well, either (e.g. it didn't have the first name, only the initial - I could go on). Honest mistake, IMHO
hahaha. gotta love the Rain parade, that are her friends!. and the look on her face, love it... equal parts pride and embarrassment where (assuming) minutes before it was quiet surprise and determination to not let it ruin her night. and she even got an apology from mr announcer guy.
I had a feeling this was going to come but i was expecting a few more pages in-between, for drama and possibly even character exploration/ morality revealing. however, i am glad that those pages dont exist, it could have turned ugly. lol...
I still stand by one of my earlier posts in that i suspect, when - not if the votes are re-tallied, Rain and Emily will either be tied for queen or Rain will be the all out victor through votes. either way i think Rain would let Emily have the crown anyways since it WAS her dream of a perfect year and queen being at the top of that list. She might have given up on that dream but I cant see Rain wanting to take that from Emily at this point, regardless of the votes.
I could even see whomever is crowned king would even give the crown (or at least try to) to Rain in a misguided attempt to let Emily and Rain be co-queens regardless of the name mixups. though that might cause more troubles than anything else, if she accepted it might reinforce the Ryan name onto her subconsciously with some of her fellow students. I dont see her accepting it if that were to happen just to prevent those suspicions, even though they are already there if they ever will be after the nights mixup.
this kind of stuff makes me both happy and sad that i never went to my prom. LOL.
A. Refuse the nomination and give the crown to Emily
Or
B. Out herself publicly and ride off in to the sunset with her Queen Emily and live happily ever after 😏
Or
C. Offer to be co-queen with Emily and share the crown
(Personally I'm hoping for B , but A and C seem more likely)
Yay, another cliffhanger leaves us with imaginations running wild.
Did Mr. Douchebag Announcer tamper with the ballots himself? And if he did, for what purposes and did somebody else put him up to it?
