Given how much Debbie overheard, I have to wonder how this might have unfolded if Emily had actually said "girlfriend" the last page...
Part of me is glad those two's conversation didn't happen here, because there's already plenty going on with prom, but part of me is hoping for it to happen now so Emily doesn't spend all night upset and background-worrying over that future conversation...
She better not go running back to Debbie. I know when I apologize for things, it’s so we both know that I did all I could to salvage the relationship. I’d hate if Debbie just forgives her and everything goes back to the way it was.
Sorry for the double posting, but also this shows that Debbie has a mind of her own. She doesn’t hate Rain just because Emily did. She has her own reasons.
She doesn't have to abandon Rain to renew her friendship with Debbie. It's not an either/or proposition. While Debbie and Rain will probably not be friendly with each other any time soon, I rather suspect that Debbie would actually have very little reason to dislike her if only she could be friends with Emily again.
So Debbie probably doesn’t actually for seriously real *hate* Rain, but she’s definitely jealous and bitter.... probably recognizes that Rain didn’t steal her best friend away, per se, but rather that Emily just more or less gravitated towards Rain, leaving her behind. This whole situation still hurt Debbie feelings a lot and she can’t help but feel betrayed and needs to vent, and who is a more convenient scapegoat than Rain, since Debbie obviously doesn’t seem to be ready or able to lay any of the blame for her broken heart on Emily.
This page is a good reminder that Emily isnt totally innocent and the Debbie isnt a total villain. Emily was never honest about who she was with Debbie, who likely would not have been super accepting of her, so from both sides their friendship was not really all the genuine. At least Debbie has morals though.
Because Emily was Debbies best friend (and maybe more from debbie's side? potential love?), and emily kinda ditched her for rain and her team.
She had her reasons though. Emily did feel like she couldn't be herself around her. She had to pretend to be someone she was not. Something she never had to do around rain.
overall, I think nobody can really be blamed for their "breakup" but it's only natural debbie would look for a cause. everyone who loses anything looks for a cause. someone or something to blame. and in debbies case, it's obvious. the reason they "broke up" is because emily fell in love with rain, so rain is to blame (according to debbie)
It's worth remembering that the reason Emily is staying at Rain's house didn't have anything to do with her mother: it was about avoiding Chase. She can probably even tell Debbie that much safely if she wants to.
Avoiding a much-older ex who's apparently gotten violent before, and an abusive parent, while being a vulnerable teenager and expecting to need a ride to the hospital any time now, is not "hiding from everything." At this point, it's a safety issue on multiple fronts
What she has against Rain is that Rain "stole" her best friend. Debbie doesn't really understand why Emily stopped hanging out with her, so she blames Rain, and at this point in the storyline that has been the case for months...
Personally speaking, I can only hope that this scene is the beginning of something of a reconciliation between Debbie and Emily. Methinks Debbie would have much less reason to dislike Rain if Rain wasn't apparently (from Debbie's perspective) stealing Emily away from her.
At least Debbie finally has something to say to Emily besides ragging on her. Debbie's cared about her this whole time, but sure didn't do much to show it. This is good, but I think it's probably a one-time thing, a throwback to their old friendship. I dunno if either is actually going to want to put the time in to build a new friendship again

Damn. Debbie's more grown-up than a lot of people who are actually running things, both in the comic and out here.
