Before anything else, I want to just say that I am a pacifist and I don't actually condone violence. I want that on the record because I feel like I've seen people forget a lot lately that authors can write about things even if they don't necessarily agree with them. If I were to witness this scene in real life, I'd have liked to see Maria figure out some other solution that helps Chanel but doesn't lead to beating someone up... even if Todd is an ass.

Maria is quick to raise her fist though. Seeing Chanel crying (one of the very most important people in her life), and knowing the person in front of her caused it, probably sped those emotions up a fair bit. And maybe the drama at home is getting to her more than she wants to admit. Plus, it's not like it's the first time Todd's crossed her (as he used to bully and beat up Rudy). While I don't mean to make excuses, I hope this at least clarifies what's bringing her to this point.

But... what now? Does she hit him? Does he fight back? What exactly does Father Quenton and Brother Arthur see? And what will they do?

I can already imagine how this goes down. She'll get blocked from Prom and this might draw attention to the 'Ryan' on the ledger and possibly even suspended and Todd'll get a slap on the wrist. I half expect this could happen even if she didn't punch him.

I am legitimately afraid of what happens next? Will Maria punch him, get expelled, and get sent to conversion therapy? Will she stop when she sees Quinton and Arthur and explain what was happening, have Chanel back her up, get Todd in trouble and dodge a bullet? Or will Quinton punish both of them for this confrontation?

I have to give it too you Jocelyn, you really know how to keep your fans guessing, and that shows how great a storyteller you are.

Just want to say I'm *not* a pacifist, and absolutely do condone proportionate violence in self-defense and defense of others

I am concerned that Maria is going to get in trouble for raising her fist. When I was in highschool I got suspended for getting beat up (I didn't even fight back at that point, I was caught off guard and didn't have a chance but the school suspended us both) that was 17 years ago but I think Catholic School would be stricter. I can't imagine this ending well for Maria

I just noticed Todd let go of Channel in the fifth frame so I doubt Maria will punch him.
So in summary:
Todd doesn't get punched,
Maria still gets in trouble.
Nobody wins :(

Just the word conversion therapy in the comics infuriates me. I as a person DO condone violence. If I ever had the opportunity i'd destroy a conversion camp.

Oh christ. I think I can see where this is going. Look at the positioning in that last panel:

Todd: "Father Quentin, thank heavens you just showed up! This violent girl in the blue shirt was attacking this poor defenseless girl in the red shirt and I stepped in to stop her."

Quentin: "Good work, upstanding red-haired fellow. We'll make sure this clearly destructive girl is swiftly expelled from the school and her parents notified."

Arthur, Maria, Chanel: "But..."

Quentin: "No excuses! Come along to my office at once Maria!"

Arthur's spine is reported MIA - again.

oh god, i really hope that doesn't happen :(

While not impossible I doubt it. Todd doesn't seem like the type to regain his composure that quickly, or to be that good at thinking on the spot. Maybe we've only seen him at his least conniving but that wouldn't be completely in line with what's been presented.

also she shouted "leave her alone" so it's unlikely that's work

Given previous cases, this might be the defining moment where Arthur's spine comes back from holiday. If not, it may be his spine's last day on Holiday.

I wonder if this will be the event that convinces Father Quenton to attend the prom. I mean, homosexuality is super rampant in his school and he needs to personally oversee the dance.
FishEye18 15th Mar 2018, 1:51 AM edit delete reply
Rampant would be best used to describe something negative that has gotten out of control. If this was a school made just for LGBT+ kids, it wouldn't be considered rampant. The word is subjective upon points of view.

I believe the term was meant as how he'd describe it, in which case it was used correctly.

Also I've the term used playfully/jokingly to describe something harmless with a negative stigma that isn't justified, so it works in that context as well.

Todd has pushed Maria to her limit. He was warned a long time ago. However that warning pertained to her protecting Rudy.

At the same time Todds comment, refusal to listen to known facts, and physical aggression towards Channel - anyone with a warrior spirit can be expected to lash out in defense.

What will now follow is how Quenton and Arthur react and "resolve" the issue. In most schools, they tend to punish all parties involved, because they are either lazy, are trying to remain neutral, or believe punishing both will punish them for both reacting, and inciting. In that last case it trains the reactor to never stand up for themselves.

All we can hope for is Quenton and Arthur heard that shout before witnessing what is likely Todd's face being smashed in.

I have unfortunately had a discussion with an "educator" who espoused this sort of reaction, because from his point of view, there's no issue until the reactor makes it one.

With people like that in charge of schools, it's no wonder schools have problems. (Disclaimer: not every school is run by people who are so short sighted and unempathetic. I'm just saying some are, and it turns into everybody's problem.)
