I'm sure you've got things to speculate regarding what kind of answer Drew is looking for and what Gavin might say, but if I may take a moment to talk about something somewhat related.

Some of you may remember that sometime last year, I asked for readers to submit votes for prom king and queen in Rain via Survey Monkey. The idea being that with all the prom talk in the story, there would need to be a prom king and queen when that night finally arrives. In real life, they'd typically be voted in by their fellow classmates. In the Rainverse, they'd be voted in by YOU. And whoever gets the most votes, I'd make happen in canon.

The polling was only meant to go until sometime in the Summer, but it ended right around the time I took my lengthy hiatus for depression, so I basically forgot about it. Until recently, when I finally remembered to check the votes, only to find a steep paywall blocking the results, due to fine print I didn't notice (probably my own fault). I wouldn't inherently be against the idea of paying a little bit if I'd known up front, but I didn't know and it wasn't asking for a little bit. The whole thing felt a little sneaky to me. And if I were to drop all that money to just hear the more obvious front runners, I was gonna be annoyed. Rather than risk frustration, I decided to just try something else.

So yesterday, I finally got around to setting up a Google Forms poll to try this again. I figure I've still got time until I need the results, and asking people to answer two simple questions again shouldn't really be that big a deal. If you don't feel like doing it again, I understand. But as is, if you don't mind voting again (or a first time, if you're a newer reader), you can submit your votes here!

And don't worry! I'm not asking for emails or personal information; it's just two little questions with no wrong answers. I don't care if you vote differently than last time (not that I'd know anyway), and I don't care if you cast weird or unlikely votes (in fact, I'd encourage more unusual choices). Don't worry if it seems impossible; I like the challenge and I'll make it work. And while you're allowed to shout out who you voted for in the comments, ONLY votes cast through the poll will be counted. And when prom king and queen are voted for in the story, I'll reveal the results to you. ^_^

Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.

This comment isn't directly related to the current page:
Lulu, in addition to selling print-on-demand books, will also let authors sell ebooks. For a long time there was an issue where they only allowed .epub files, which aren't suitable for comics, but now they will also sell PDFs. If you are already selling print books through lulu, the application process to sell digital through them should be really easy.

I want to strongly encourage you, Jocelyn, to sell PDFs through Lulu. Selling PDFs will allow you to reach people who can't or won't get the printed books, for any of several reasons, including
a)People who move around a lot and can't take lots of printed books with them (like me)
b)People who live with unaccepting family members, which includes a lot of readers of Rain. It's a lot easier to hide a PDF from your parents than a physical comic book.

Now on to my thoughts on this particular page:
In high school, I had a friend who was like Gavin, in that she was the only straight person in our social circle. She briefly had a crush on me, before I was out to anyone (including myself). I don't think there's any special trick that let's people like her and Gavin be more understanding. It's really just a matter of thinking about other people's feelings as much as you can.

Oh, and uh, I forgot who I voted for last time, so this time I went with the R duo of Randy and Rain.

I really like this one. Shows the good side of Gavin, and shows that while Drew fucked up he's trying his hardest.

This one is probably up there as one of my favorite pages of the comic.

I voted for Gavin and Maria. Both are good friends and respect one another’s respective relationships and would only be required to do the one obligatory dance and then the dog-and-pony show is over. In hindsight I’m wishing I had chosen gavin and Rain for the same reason...crap.

My real answer is probably too long to explain in the amount of space they give guests, but let me try.

People like Gavin that do a better job at catching on have an intelligent type of empathy that's based on "I can't truly understand this person's situation, but I know what these type of things can be like" while most people have an emotional type of empathy that only allows them to understand if they can put themselves in the situation.

A friend of mine had a hard time understanding that I could understand their personal trauma over zit popping. That I was so nice, so comforting when they're having an actual break down while he ended up hearing some of the trauma I'm shouldering made him feel pathetic and stupid. He doesn't understand how I can basically hate a mutual acquaintance, but still respect her pronouns. Another comic I'm reading made a post today defending "low hanging fruit" and I am disgusted. Understanding that, despite whatever you've been through, people have been through the same stuff colored differently is what allows me to keep open minded and respectful. I don't "get" everything. I'm not the world's best ally or anything. But I shut up and listen and learn or admit that I'll never understand fully.

There are times when I can't understand the person's exact situation, but I know what it's like to be misunderstood.

There are times when I can't understand the person, to such an extent, I'm uncertain if they even are misunderstood. Trolls exist, after all.

But it all comes down to, respect is more important than understanding. This is not to say that I respect everybody. I don't have the spoons. There's no way I could possibly have the spoons. But just trying to respect the people who seem like they're trying to respect people is generally enough. Not respecting the guy who says I'm racist for running across the street when the don't walk sign is just starting to flash? Nobody gives me flack for that.

Well, ok, Mr "You're Racist" might. But he's called a blind woman using a walker racist, so I don't think I'd be getting on his good side ever.

I also work with a similar mindset and I agree about "low hanging fruit" it's messed up. On a similar note, I also sincerely hate the notion of "punching up". Just because someone has certain normative or socially desirable traits, doesn't mean they deserve to be treated like crap by minority groups. Being a jerk is being a jerk and it doesn't matter who it's directed at, it's wrong to be mean to someone because of who they are/how they look.

I'm guessing Gavin's answer will be the most obvious one. He doesn't actually understand any of it, but he accepts and respects his friends. He fake-dated Maria for a long time, making him well aware of the messed up situations and struggles of LGBT+ people.

What... what I think Gavin would say, in not so many words... is that the point is not in being perfect, because if you beat yourself up constantly over missing so much, over and over, you're going to be concentrating so hard on that that the odds are, you will not only miss the opportunity to make it right, but you will also humiliate the person who you slighted, but also that you need to *try*. Trying is the most important thing you can do, and that's really what he was missing - that effort.

In short: Sometimes it's not in just understanding, because if you are perfectly confident you understand without effort, you may actually be missing something really important, as Drew repeatedly was. Sometimes it's in that effort to understand, and in being there and standing by us.

I love Gavin as that ally - He's a stand-up character (and totally my prom king for it). Good guy.

Well for a start, I think Gavin actually believes that trans people are the gender they say they are. Things become "confusing" for cis allies when they try to be understanding and accepting but don't believe the trans person's claims

Wow, I don't think reading the entire thing up to this point in a day was a good idea, the wait for each page is really testing my patience lol

Still looking forward to the next one tho :P
