And here, we start to get into Ana's heavy backst- BACK TO SMILEY! Man, she isn't kidding when she says she's not into the seriousness.

I want to stress that in the last two panels, Gavin is joking around. Ana just derailed the depressing stuff, so he's going with the flow. Not saying he wouldn't like it to be a date, but he's a smart guy and she made her stance kinda clear a couple pages ago. I don't necessarily want to spell things out like this, but after the "friendzone" comment he made last week, Gavin seems to be on thin ice with a lot of readers (and I understand why, but I didn't really anticipate it beforehand). I'm just trying to make sure there's no bad blood.

Finally, today's page was originally planned to be the second of a two-pager with the last. I hurt my wrist (somehow) last week though, so I split them to make sure I don't fall too behind while I recover. I'm already feeling much better so no worries. Next update: back to Rain and Kylie and Emily: the true stars of the chapter. ^_^

Also, I've said this before, but I'm trying to raise money for SRS, and I'm still struggling with it. If you can help, it would be most welcome. If not, don’t worry about it. I totally understand (you don't need to feel bad or apologize if you can’t).

I didn't feel animosity for Gavin. His behavior's totally cool. I just don't like the word "friendzone" because usually I hear it with pretty bad connotations.

Gavin is just going with the flow trying not to upset anyone, which in itself will offend someone its an unavoidable effect of society.

That is a good question Gavin. Is she some sort of troubled teenager? I don't think there are that many ways pretty middle class blonde girl can get in trouble - its pretty much only drugs or promiscuity, neither would apply as to when she was a kid.
She had a boyfriend, so she "probably" isn't lesbian. She could be transgendered, and her bf went berserk when he found out. That would also explain super protective dad, and being bullied in 5th grade.
My not-theory is that "he" told "his" dad back in elementary school, he was supportive and let her dress as girl, other kids mocked her for that, so they moved. In new school she was in closet, so everyone though she was cis, guy she had a crush on asked her out, so she agreed without thinking much about the fact that he had reputation. He got grabby on date, coped a fell of something he didn't expect, tried to bash her for "her crime", so her dad made her move again. Thats of course, if she even is transgendered. Bonus if her mother abandoned them for "being homo-sinners". I am pre emptively starting to ship her dad with Fara, just in case.

As for paying for movie/popcorn.
That's right Gavin. You don't spend money unless there's a slimmest chance of getting some. And even then no more than 40$ a date.

thats a really really invasive and personal question to ask someone he barely knows... and the 'why all the abuse' thing i think could be phrased a little better it's kinda like asking someone why they got mugged instead of whether they're ok :s i dont wanna be downbuzz and i rlly do love the comic but that just kinda doesnt quite sit right :s

Could be phrased better, sure, but conversations are rarely as ideal as they could be, especially in real life where people have less time to think.

Both of the people involved are smart, and are handling the matter tastefully, and that's probably the important bit. Gavin's intentions are good, and she knows his intentions are good, even if the wording isn't perfect.
