When my mother died, it was a relief. I could finally (after 56 years) stop trying to find some sort of magic words or actions that might somehow get her to be a real mother. I.e., to actually relate to me like a human being.
yep. I had thought that when my Nmom moved into her own place a few months ago that my mental state would calm a little. But as I was in the carpentry field the last 5 years of my um... past life, I'm relied upon a lot due to my experience. I'm the oldest of her three kids and my two younger brothers have disowned her so she's been leaning on me even more. And I can barely focus on my family or my own transition because I'm railroaded regularly by my mother.
Relationships with parents can be really hard. I know I'm still in an in-between state of still believing in my dad or letting go of our relationship since I often feel let down by him.
Thinking about this more, it may actually be better for Emily that her mom wasn't home, even though she doesn't feel like it now. Last we heard, Emily was still 17 (though maybe her birthday happened and I just don't remember). If she had been able to confront her mom yesterday, her mom might have been able to cause legal trouble for both Emily and Fara for "kidnapping" Emily. Granted, maybe with enough legal wrangling the courts could be convinced that leaving Emily alone at home for months is neglect and Emily's mom should lose custody, but custody is normally a question of civil law, where there is no right to an attorney, and Emily's mom probably has more money than Fara. And even if they win, it would be a long and unpleasant legal battle.
If Emily's mom stays away for a few more months, then Emily may be able to confront her after she turns 18, when it will be a lot safer to do so.
Well, it's at least a little surprising, because when I've run favorite character tournaments for other media franchises there's usually at least some villains who do well.
I think Rain is different, because the world is realistic, the protagonists resemble a lot of the readers, and the antagonists resemble real people that a lot of the readers have to deal with. A supervillain out to conquer the world is a character people may read about for escapism. Norman, Marcus, and Father Quenton are reminders of real villains some of us have dealt with.
Yes, Marcus is Rain's father. Liriel is Rain's mother. Madison is Aidyn's younger sister (Aidyn being the guy who went with Ryan to prom and freaked out about him wearing Gavin's coat). Norman is Maria and Rudy's father. Puddle is Rain's pet rabbit. (Father) Quenton is the evil former principal. Simone is Gavin's mom. And you should remember who Maria is;)
This one really provokes feelings from me. I have a Rain desktop background, one of her early in series, right after she makes amends with Gavin. She has long hair, and her smile is so much more pure without having the more recent problems she’s suffered. Her life was still so hard back then, and really, given her father’s abuse, she already had a lot of traumatic experiences in her life long before the current situations. That dichotomy of smiling through suffering is one told continuously in Rain, and a saddening amount of the other characters. I get really emotional when reading about a girl who barely keeps living at times, and those eras are cruelly cyclical for this girl. My heart connects with these people’s feelings, and I feel a lot in these comics. Thanks for developing this, Lynn.
Yep, learning your parents suck is always pain, and you always try to find an explanation. The worst one is "maybe I actually suck", I try to fight with those for last two decades and finally I gave up and started to look for help.
Not specific to this page but I just wanted to say how much I’ve loved Rain and you now have a growing fan base in New Zealand. I’ve just bought the first two volumes as a birthday present for my non binary teen and I know they are going to love it! Thanks for the amazing work you do
Not actually related to the comic, but I found the Magical prequel stories and liked them. DA being as hard to navigate as it is, have any other stories been posted?
At this time, it's just the four prequel stories for Magical. When I finally get around to it "present time" Magical itself, I'd like it to be as a comic rather than prose, but that may be a while yet. (And if anyone else is reading this and doesn't know what we're talking about, you can find these here.) https://www.deviantart.com/jocelynsamara/gallery/46861739/magical
Unless you just mean you'd like something else written that way. In which case, there's also Lavender, for that. That one's a bit older and might be rougher quality-wise, but it's in a lot of ways like a predecessor to Rain. I should warn that one is unfinished to this day, leaves off on a cliffhanger, and I haven't figured out whether or not I will get back to it or not. But there's nine chapters available if that interests you at all. :) https://www.deviantart.com/jocelynsamara/gallery/60136/lavender
@Jocelyn
Thank you. I will look into Lavender and look forward to reading it.
On a different note, I was looking at the DA and ran across the Shangri-La Demo. Have any of y'all tried to download it recently, and if so, were you able to? I get a long series of pages that all say "We are generating a new download key for this file." but never
actually do anything, almost like it got taken down or something. Thanks!
Thank you for all your great writing! After Lavender chapter 8, the cliffhanger at the end of 9 didn't wasn't as bad as I feared. I will keep an eye out for Lavender if you ever decide to come back to it and for Magical when it eventually shows up.

You never stop hoping...

Anyhow, Part Five of the Rain Favorite Character Tournament is up! As usual you can vote for as many characters as you want, and the top four will advance to the next round.

But what truly sucks is not trusting anyone and keeping yourself isolated and alone. It took me over 20 years to figure that out.
Thank you so much for sharing! I hope your teen ends up enjoying it! ^_^

Hmm... Actually, the download is not working for me either. I wonder how long it's been like that. Sorry for the inconvenience. ^^;
I know I still have that demo lying around on my computer somewhere. I'll see if I can upload that again. :)
