Just one more monocle reference before we close out the year. XD

Aiken's been growing a lot throughout the story since his initial role in the story. He's since come around and done his own research, mended things with Rain, and apologized to Jess. Heather hasn't been quite as present throughout the story, but she's been doing some growing of her own.

I don't know that Heather would've "freaked out", per se, but in the beginning of the story, she might've rolled her eyes and changed the subject. Maybe it's Rain and Fara. Maybe it's Jess. Maybe it's Ky. Or maybe it's herself just maturing, but she's come a long way too. She did get Ky that binder on Christmas. She's actually using the correct pronouns now. I'm proud of Heather. She was never as bad as Aiken or Kellen on their worst days, but she's made some good progress for herself.

And then there's Kellen. I mean, I guess you could call this progress. She's not fighting. She's not dropping slurs. She's not misgendering or deadnaming. Like, she's still sighing about it and being a bit of a nuisance, but compared to how she was, it's technically a step up. Not a big enough step, but it's something.

I guess we'll see how far she's actually come soon enough...

Showing how far Aiken and Heather have come is a nice way to end 2019.

Siiiigh, just shut up, Kellen.

Hopefully she does before Jessica gets to the reason she came over...

No, I understand what Kellen is saying. She's not readying up for like an anti-trans rant or nothing, it's just that for her it's been hard adjusting. It's still a subject that makes her uncomfortable to talk about because of how personally it relates. So I think she's just tired of all the stuff going on and just wants things to "go back to normal". Because change is hard for a lot of people.
Cpaz 31st Dec 2019, 4:05 AM edit delete reply
Huh. That's actually a very good thought. It's interesting how the concept of adjusting to new and uncomfortable experiences is often considered inconsiderate in both parties cases.
During times such as the one we're seeing here: it's important to note how people handle situations like this differently. So I hope in coming pages we don't see an automatic antagonistic responses, probably ruining the night for everyone. Diffuse, talk, and hopefully move past it.

(I hope.)

It still surprises me that we as humans can be so forgiving, it goes against nature and instincts. If our experience shows that someone is not good to us, instead of avoiding them we tend to be more open to forgiving and giving them a chance to change.

It really is one of our better traits

Awww, I love how Aiken didn't even blink. He's come so far! <3 And Heather being supportive of Ky! I'm so happy she's the one who made that comment. Hopefully we'll see more parent-child interactions with them together when they get home from Prom.

I know right now a lot of other people are anti-Kellen or anti-redemption, and maybe I'm projecting [because Kellen's new-current attitude is very similar to my mom's stance] but I *get* her weariness and not wanting to have to deal/interact with these topics that have been unwillingly thrust into her life.

I'm curious as to where she'll go from here (no matter the direction it takes). Kellen doesn't seem angry or even upset, which is a fairly new tone for her. I want to see where her head is at now she's had a few weeks(?) to think over the incident and aftermath of what she did to Rain.

To clarify: while I understand her weariness. That doesn't give her a pass to check out or excuse any of her behaviors or anything like that. (Tualha made some great comments to that effect below.)

Ah yes, the eternal sigh of the unaffected.

“Why should black lives matter? All lives matter!” (Yes, but it’s the black ones that are in unreasonable danger, as you’d know if you were paying attention. But you don’t have to pay attention, do you? No one is going to shoot you during a traffic stop, whitey.)

“I don’t know why gay people have to flaunt it in public.” (Oh? And do straight people never display their sexuality in public? Say, at a dance? Or when greeting their partner at the airport?)

“Well, when I was young, we didn’t need all this therapy and hand-holding. People pulled their weight and didn’t air their problems.” (Yes, and then they went home and got drunk and beat their wives and children. Or they killed themselves. Mental illness is not a new problem, and hiding it doesn’t make it go away.)

And so, we have Kellen, and her real-life counterparts. Poor Kellen. She never heard about transpeople when she was young, except in terms of jokes at others’ expense, and she never learned anything about it. She doesn’t want to deal with any of that stuff. She doesn’t want to educate herself. She doesn’t want to have to remember pronouns, or new names. In short, she wants transpeople to remain “those weird people I read about in the news, and never have to deal with personally.”

And yeah, I can see it’s a nuisance for Kellen; but it’s far more of a nuisance for Rain. Especially when Kellen took it so far as to violate Rain’s bodily autonomy and cut her hair off.

So, there you are, Kellen. You screwed up and got everyone mad at you. Going to double down? Or admit that you were wrong? We’re all waiting.
Magical Girl Esme 31st Dec 2019, 9:53 AM edit delete reply
You're right, Kellen doesn't want to accept Rain, Ky, Rudy and the others for what they are and like many people, it's probably due to her upbringing. This is a very big change for her and as Drake Zephyr said, change is hard for a lot of people.

Asking and wanting others to accept and respect what we are (I'm a mildly genderfluid lesbian) is fine but we can't just get in someone's face and demand those things or that they change right now. I know several LGBTQ+ people who go beyond just flaunting their orientation, etc. by watching how others react then intentionally getting into overly dramatic PDAs right in their face. Things like that don't help much in getting people to change.

BTW, as for "No one is going to shoot you during a traffic stop, whitey", besides being racist, it's also wrong. A couple years ago, one of my best friends lost an eye and 3 fingers when 2 young men walked up to the car she and some friends were in at a traffic light and opened fire. One of the others died. Everyone in the car was white.

Yeah, you know, looking back to when I was a kid versus the world I am aware of now, there's a lot less people getting drunk and beating their wives and children in my world now. I'm not saying that everything's better, and I'm not saying that my experiences are representative of the world.

But the limited set of data that I have perceived strongly agrees with this correlation. Assuming that the correlation I inferred from your fourth paragraph was implied and not just in my head.

On Smack Jeeves it was kind of cramped, but here on Comic Fury the comment section is wider. I like this better.

Y'know, I kinda get where Kellen is probably coming from. Not saying it's right, but while a lot of people in the community might not blink twice at a lot of this, someone who's had little interaction, much less whatever Kellen's problem is, can feel like this stuff is getting a disproportionate amount of attention. Sort of like when a group of friends starts talking about their favorite fandom like Star Trek, or D&D, or Naruto, and that one "muggle" in the group gets annoyed with everyone for always relating stuff back to that, but y'know, way more offensive because of the dysphoria and stuff.
Long-Time Lurker 31st Dec 2019, 10:43 PM edit delete reply
Ooo, fandom is a really useful analogy. I'll have to use that sometime.
Guest 31st Dec 2019, 2:34 AM edit delete reply
Yes Kellen it’s always going to be this and it’s always been that trans, NB, gender non conforming, etc, people have been part of the human existence and it always will be so.
It looks like you’ve made a little progress in realizing that... baby steps and soon bigger and bigger steps, then one day perhaps you won’t even give the subject a thought and you’ll just accept that people need to be themselves, not pigeonholed into a small list of fixed definitions pressured upon them by narrow minded “societal norms” which were dictated and enforced by religious organizations who thought they should be masters over the whole world, and are still butthurt about getting stripped of the stranglehold they once held over western civilization for centuries.

I loved the recurring joke about Rudy/Ruby's monocle last chapter and it's awesome that it gets one last hurrah here!
