So, last we saw Emily, she stepped out into the lobby and take a call. It turns out it's her mother, who's been away for months at this point. Though we never hear the mother's side of the conversation, we get an idea of what she's saying to Emily by her reactions (assuming I did well enough writing Emily's side, I guess).

I actually did write her mom's lines. I ended up removing them partly to make it flow better (and less cluttered). But also, there's something more ominous that we've never seen this woman and don't even get to hear her. I don't think I'll ever change that either. We never see her in person, but we definitely feel the effects of what she does. The dialogue itself is also layed out in a labyrinthine way to make the page look overwhelming/stressful. We're watching only Emily's side of the conversation, and I wanted to really highlight her struggle to keep up with her mother by being "all over the place".

There's a couple very particular lines I want to address too. First of all, Chase getting arrested after he attacked someone, and Blair being there to see it. When did that happen? It was actually from one of the bonus chapters in Volume 5. I didn't think it was so important that it had to be part of the main story, but it's probably worth knowing about. But this also explains Blair's long, crazy story of how he learned Emily's pregnant, if you remember. I can flesh that out a bit later for non book buyers too.

There's also a moment when Emily almost comes out. She wants to brave and stand up to her mom, but whether it's something specific her mom says, or just the general attitude, Emily backs off, never getting further than mentioning "her gir-". Emily also reluctantly agrees to move back home, so maybe her mom is sticking around for a while this time. But it feels less than ideal...

I realize there's a lot to take in here, but I'm very interested in hearing your thoughts.

I don’t like how all of this went down. Emily’s mom leaves her for months and then shows up and expects Emily to cone home? Why? For what? She clearly didn’t care enough the last few months. After all that, it doesn’t seem to me that she has any right to be telling Emily to do anything.

Emily, you don't have to give her more chances than you're comfortable with. I know it's hard to leave her behind - to leave your childhood behind. But you've got people who love you for who you are, no matter what. You've got a family - a real family, one who chooses you from the masses to call their own, and who accepts you unconditionally. Don't be afraid to rely on them.
And when you do return to face your birth mother, don't go alone. You have so many people who would be happy to be there and support you. Rain, especially, would drop everything to be there for you. Because you are not alone.

So, funny story, I was in the locker room at school and my friend was nervous about being shirtless. So I was like “I’m the gayest person in the room, and I’m not staring,” Then this other girl came up to us and was like “Idk, I think I’m gayer.” She freaking challenged my gayness! So I was like “Well, actually, I’m pansexual but I use gay as a blanket term.” And she was “Hey, me too!” So now we are friends. (Pan buddies!)

Emily handled this pretty well. If she'd just hung up, mom would have blown her phone up all through prom. If she'd given in too easy, mom would have been suspicious.

Now tonight she just shuts off her phone, goes back with her friends and mom can stay up all wigging out if she wishes. Tomorrow at school, well, I don't think the school will look fondly at a mother who disappears for months on end...

Gah. This is hard to read.

It's really well done! I just recently had to cut both my parents out of my life for being transphobic, so parent/child stuff gets to me pretty easily atm.

I'm really sad Emily is going back though :(

To quote Han Solo from every Star Wars movie: "I've got a bad feeling about this."

Everyone has to face their demons eventually. Emily needs to look her mother in the face and just yell out everything wrong with her. Then leave. 1 last confrontation must happen for her to be free.

I'm not particularly surprised that the call came from Emily's mom, since there aren't that many people who could get her attention at prom that easily. On the other hand, I am a bit more surprised that Emily would agree to go back, especially without consulting with Rain first. That seems like a bad if not out-right dangerous idea.

My suspicion is that this chapter will involve Emily's reckoning with Debbie, while next chapter (or possibly the one after that) will have the conflict with Emily's mom front and center. Each big antagonist will be dealt with before the end of the story. And, given that the Deviant Art folders indicate Rain will run at least until chapter 44, I suspect that there will still be plenty of time for the climax of the entire series to involve Marcus.

Of all the speculations I had about Prom Night, I definitely did not see this coming. I hope Emily won't be going home alone.
